Its not quite the same but I had a Toyota van years ago that had the exact same issue and the problem was the oil pressure.

I had to replace the fith gear on my 3AJ with 98000 kilometres that looked very much the same. From all the similar issues ive seen, it seems to be a common issue with the Tenere. All my other internals were pristine.

I'm sorry I can't help you mate but I can't help but scratch my head at putting a 3AJ engine in a go-kart. Seems completely unsuitable?
