Ashes spoked wheels here will charge you a grand a wheel (minimum) for the rim, spokes & lacing up. :huh:
I should point out, that is an Excel rim (or similar quality) with extra thick SS spokes & the best of workmanship.

Bloody hell wrap up....ouch...my 465 I think I paid about 37 quid a set for genuine yam spokes,although rears are now discontinued and had some good original rims,the sm pro trade price at about 30 quid plus vat for front and 50 rear,so to do 3 yz 125s it wasn't the end of the world cost wise....we get some parts relatively cheaply but shit weather and a monumental heating bill...you get good weather but....stand and deliver prices for some parts?... smile:

We can buy OEM parts cheaper from say Partzilla than the dealers can buy through official channels, the reason being is the dealers have to go through a middle man in Malaysia (i think its Malaysia) who takes his big fat juicy cut, they cannot buy direct from the factory in Japan.

The Malaysian guy brought the rights to Yamaha Australasia many years ago & us poor buggers have suffered ever since. :bat:

I've decided to get a few quotes from wheel builders here in the Sydney region. I've always preferred steel rims over alloy on dirt bikes, more than once I've belted a badly dented steel rim into useable shape that would have been infeasible on an alloy one. Being a shoestring budget resurrection[that word again :lol: ]I'll be guided as much by price as anything else, while still remaining conscious of the safety factor. :fall:

After some soul searching have decided to go with two new rims fitted with heavy duty stainless steel spoke. Had a few quotes and spoke to Chris at Spoked Wheel Repairs in Peakhurst and looking at around $600 for the front and a little more for the rear. We discussed alloy vs steel and the modern alloy rims are far stronger than any steel rim was. I'll be fitting gold rims of course. :dance:


Its only money.................

I'm curious though, I wonder if the rims on my early build Tenere are 'natural' alloy coloured rather than gold because it's an early build of maybe they were replaced by someone else in it's 30 year history?

Called in to have a chat with my local bike wrecker, he's convinced he can have the front wheel rebuilt for less, so I've left it with him for a couple of days. Might save enough to spend on a new front tyre, woo hoo!

He sends his wheel rebuild jobs to John Titman Racing in QLD. I recall a few of the motorcycle racers I've talked to over the years when I was a Marshal used their services on their Classic and Post Classic race bikes.

Time will tell :biggrin:

I had an issue moving the Ten around my lock up with no front wheel, so I fitted this....................

Dropped my cactus front wheel into Chris Squires' Spoked Wheel repairs at Peakhurst today I've decided on the anodized aluminium colour, same as was original. Chris will also have the hub assy blasted and recoloured in satin black, and fit a new tyre and tube. I've left the tyre choice to his experience as I do a lot of road work and like hooking into the corners. Rim brand is Exceed, same quality/price as Excel but according to a few of his customers the Exceed are a stronger rim. This won't be cheap excersize :omg: but I want these wheels done right[ie not by me!]. Not gonna be much shy of $1K I reckon. Left a five hundred buck deposit, and I'll post a pic of the finished wheel.

If the rear wheel is still serviceable I'll probably get a new tyre and tube fitted, and just clean up the rim and spokes as best I can so I can at least get the bike on the road and ride it while I save the next thou for the rear end.................hope the motor doesn't cark it :biggrin:

If I remember rightly a set of stainless spokes cost me about £65 per wheel & lacing was £20... I did Tenere 2 wheels myself & had the local wheelbuilder check them for me, he still charged me a tenner each so was hardly worth the hours I wasted lacing them..........
I fitted excels to Tenere 1 & they were expensive, however nowhere near what you guys are paying.... I bought the rims, had them laced by Talon with stainless spokes, the hubs were powder coated new bearings, etc... fitted new discs front & rear & new tyres & tubes & all that cost me about 800 quid in total...

They are very nice though

I reckon I've got the wheels down to about 200 quid a pair now... powder coated rims & hubs laced with stainless spokes
