WHEEL OPTIONS

Post by wmoncrieff »

Gday All,

Replacement wheels are proving to be a wheel pain in the butt :book:

After endless emails to every wrecker in Oz, nothing. I recall somebody mentioning pattern rims were available from Thailand? I've left my front wheel with my local wrecker/mechanic and as option he might have some good wheels we can take the rims off and have it laced to my existing hubs. I'm not concerned about originality. Has anyone else done this?

I'd rather spend the dollars if I need to on something so critical as the wheels! Especially as I do enjoy throwing a bike into a good set of corners :nordie:
Cheers Will.

There are rims available from Thailand (around $170 for a pair) but both the Dan`s (Just Dan & Danjet600) had issues with them.

You can read Just Dan`s 34L rebuild about it, not sure in Danjet600 wrote anything on his Transalp rebuild thread about them? but i was talking with him on the weekend about these Thai rims, he mention they had a 10 to 15mm runout on the join.

Id imagine Danny my chime in on this? not sure if anyone else on here has bought them?

If at all possible id try to find a set of OEM gold rims or complete wheels, if not in Aussie overseas (europe or the USA).

They do come up for sale in Aussie from time to time, i got a real tidy rear wheel complete with axle brakes (the whole lot) with a real good condition tyre for only $50.

That's a lot of runout on a new rim :omg:

I'd dearly love a set of gold rims, but in the short term I'd even use a set of steel rims on my hubs so I can use the bike while still searching for the correct alloy ones. Am I correct in assuming that the wheels on the 34L only fit the 34L and no other Tenere models?

Thanks Mezo, that's a big help! :thanks:

BTW I just read JustDan's rebuild of the 34L. What an epic journey that was :omg:

Epic indeed, i think he lost heart with it in the end & gave up, he sold it back to Andy (who he bought it from originally). :sadnanna:

Excels are probably the best bet but at a cost,I've used sm pro rims on a few of my yzs, cheap to buy,not perfect but I've had no problems with them chucking bike off jumps and stuff and have used reasonably hard..
Not 100 percent on the xt I've not looked at spoke nipple size relative to holes in rim but on early 80s yzs the nipples are a bit smaller than whats maybe ideal for the holes in some of the modern rims, that said my it 175 had new d.i.d rims on with genuine spokes, that previous owner had built and they've not been a problem, just look at bit odd as nipple is a bit small for the whole.
I'm sure a good wheel guy could sort you out with spokes with correct nipples to fit a modern rim.

Stuff in Aussie is well pricey Marc, even old second hand shit is expensive, Excel "that`s proper luxury"

Ashes spoked wheels here will charge you a grand a wheel (minimum) for the rim, spokes & lacing up.
I should point out, that is an Excel rim (or similar quality) with extra thick SS spokes & the best of workmanship.

I hear you guys re the wheel expense :bigyikes: but the last thing I want to do is :fall:

In my last resurrection[not a rebuild or resto]of a '74 RD250 I ended up splurging on a new DID rim laced with Yamaha spokes. That little job alone was waay more than I paid for the whole non running bike :puke: I ended up having to sell the finished machine at a huge loss, along with a shed full of parts I had accumulated over the two year build. The sale was forced by injury & illness[not bike related], in that order and is the reason why I need a bike with LOTS of leg room and the ability to be able to stand while riding.

I didn't notice the state of the rims on collection :nono: and should have scraped some of the muck off first eh

I've been riding trail bike on an off for years and have never seen a rim as bad as my front one is. What beats me is it passed rego in 2008and I'm sure all that cancer didn't happen while it was in a shed away from the coast?

Still, I'm gonna persevere, the end result won't be pretty or original but at least I will have a bike I can ride as long as my body functions the way it should  I'm sure if it goes pearshaped[wait, my body IS pear shaped :omg: ] I can sell stuff and recoup at least some bucks.
meanwhile, if any members have a spare front wheel in need of a loving home, I'm your man :nannawave:
Cheers Will.

Well i had muttered to Danny over a tipple of how bad your rims were, never seen a rim with that much cancer.

Yep been in the same situation with my 3AJ, spent every last penny on the bike & sold it at a loss, oh well at least the next owner (with cash in his pocket can enjoy) that's life im afraid. :dunno:
