49L added to the stable

I was browsing ebay as you do while watching tele on Saturday night. A 49l caught my eye (Is it an XT with Tenere tank?) I rang my therapist (aka Actionman) for counseling however his phone battery was on its last legs and he was trying to ring a towtruck for his broken down 4 wheel machine. Without Actionman's counsel, like, where are you going to put it? what are you going to tell the missus?, you already have a load of unfinised projects?, you said you would not buy any more non-electric machines?????? etc,etc,etc. I weakened and rang the contact number on Ebay. He was a very nice bloke (and a Kiwi ) He has rescued the bike from an aboriginal settlement in SA and was going to do it up but run out time and inspiration(it is very ratty.) Any way I didnt have an early Tenere in the stable ( do have an 83 TT) and he agreed to trailer it over as he was coming over to Melbourne this week. I am meeting him tomorrow in Colac (200k west of Melbourne)
Apart from a complete rebuild, I will need headlight and side plastics and packrack (like every one else!!) I will do a complete resto on this one and post photos but perhaps wont put a time frame on that !





As it is an 84 I can also put it on club plates(cheap rego in Victoria) So wish me luck and I will post more photos after I pick it up

Sorry for the cock up Bernie, i still don't get why it says 49L ?

Does it say 49L on the frame & engine also? ive just been reading through the Yam codes on dropbears & i see it now, its a XT600 L (49L) 1984.

I also saw my ones & they are XT600 ZK (39E) 1983.

Got an urgent phone call from Bernieboy en-route to the pickup zone. Musing while driving, he now thinks it might be a plain XT with a Tenere tank/seat plonked on it, or someone has fiddled with or swapped the compliance plate. Not happy with vendor!!

I was Google searching for a 49L Tenere & couldn't find a picture anywhere? couldn't find a picture of a 49L XT600 full stop?

But without wanting to sound "racist" again, you have to wonder when the vendor said he "rescued it from some native chappy"

Id be running the chassis & engine numbers pass the old bill before i spent any money on a restoration.

Ask any Englishman reading this, would you buy a Tenere off a Pikey at your local gypo camp with no rego plate or documents, only if you want it taken from you by the old bill at a later date.

The '85' is as I bought it ($750) the rings and timming chain were Rat Shit, I've gone first oversize 95.5mm with new piston, rings and all the rest of it, just run it in and goes like the clappers.

I'll have to check it now ya bastad , have to pull all the head light off so I can get enough light to see the No. on the head stem.

If I don't have ta pull the head light off, I appologise for the above comment on your heritage.

PS have we worn out yet???

A 49L is 1984, you say your bike is 85? so it must have had an engine swap then?

You should be able to see the letters just by turning the bars to the left.
