XTZ660 starting problems.. almost there?

Post by untertaber »

Today I got my hands on some starting fluid from holts, Sprayed some in the airbox fired her up and boom she starts!.. But doesnt stay running, she did however react to the throttle and I could probably keep her running if I gave her soms revs. However theres still the problem that she won't fire up without the good stuff.. but I can atleast determine its some kind of fuel issue. Recently cleaned her carbs, so I doubt thats the problem. Gas tank clean enough? Because she does get it when I rev her. Is she getting too much fuel on startup? I feel like im so close yet so far from fixing her, do you guys have any suggestions to what my next step could be?

As you can rev it and start it with a can, it still looks like the idle circuit. Have you seen fluid getting through the passageways on the bench? Might have a proper blockage. Picked up something after the clean. Did it to our carter carb. Or screw is too far in/ float height or valve not allowing enough fuel level. Does it run on choke? The choke supply comes from the bottom of the bowl.
I’d clean the idle circuit again (don’t forget to blow it all out with pressure) reset the screw (check no o ring rubber has broken off), and do the fuel level check again with the tubing. Can do that on the bench first too with a gravity supply.

Hey man, no the bike doesnt run on choke either. I doubt its the carb not being cleaned because i've cleaned it a bunch of times, could it be the fuel asjustment? Or the float not set right?

Yeah, like I said try the pilot screw first, easiest. I’d take it out and check for damage, making sure I had fuel flow through the ways. You’d be able to see from inside. Might be clean but doesn’t mean there’s not a piece of clean brass in there somewhere. Then once back in at about 2 1/2 turns out, I’d recheck the fuel height. Valve could be sticking too. Not sure what specs you have for the 660 but fuel height is probably the same at 6-8mm below float bowl gasket when carbs are vertical. (This is easier to check on the bench first too) Trial and error for best running but too low and she won’t run at all.

Hey man, gonna take a look at it today. I tried keeping her on with giving gas but it won't work. Gonna check the pilot screw today, would it matter that there is a different muffler on the bike than stock? Shouldnt matter for atleast getting her to run right? Thanks for all the help so far.

Yeah you’re right, ballpark is ok and running, then you can alter it in future after riding.
With the different exhaust it might just take an extra turn out maybe. Once it runs, if it’s more than 3 1/2 turns out, you would just go up a size of pilot jet. I run a 48 over stock 46, with an arrow can but I think your pilot is already larger.
There’s a good set of instructions for low revving carbs on the net once you are ready to tune her. . Really useful. Factory pro.

Hey man I just got the bike running yesterday, don't know exactly what I did.. but I went over everything one more time cleaned everything out, pilot screw 2 1/2 turns out. Tested if fuel was going from tank to pump, pump to carb all was good. Started and she fired up right away, now im hoping it still starts a couple of days later .. fingers crossed. How much rpm should the choke make the bike run, when I choked her she got up to about 1400rpm, when I turned it off it didn't change. Is that normal or should the choke make the rpm go up higher...? Also.. does this bike even have a fuel filter?! Because I sure as hell can't find one, think I will rig my own custom filter up to it.

Good news she started 👍🤞I normally find I need choke unless she’s still warm but have to trim it down to about 15% out after a minute or less, then ride a few minutes and push it all in. It should raise the revs, I wonder if it’s stuck open and carb is adjusted to that, like mine had been, or it’s blocked in the bowl. Had to drill one of mine out. I keep my idle around 1300-1400, can do Less but singles behave a little better slightly higher.
Only change stuff after using her warm.
Dunno about the 660 but 1vj filters are just gauze above the fuel taps in the tank.
If she’s running she’s tunable. It is frustrating when they’re silent. 👍 hope you get to enjoy the sun soon.

She starts, still a little rough takes a bit but starts. Seems like allot of stuff was making into the carbs, put the filter in between.. fuel line a little bend but I think it works.. gonna get a new rear shock in her and stock exhaust.
