Engine cut out after one minute

Post by Trilledk »

Hello ,
I bought a 1992 XTZ 660 Tenere from police auction and i can´t get it working.
It cut´s out about one minute after starting. Then i can get it working again after 20-30 sec pushing the starter. Then it cut´s out again after 10-15 seconds. And that is it. About a halve hour later i can start it again , and it cuts out after one minute.
In this first minute it is working perfect, good power and running smooth, until it dies. (it feels like no fuel or no spark)
First i thought it might be the fuel and changed filter and cleaned the carb. And replaced the fuelpump. > No change .
Now , i closed the fuel valve after the engine cut out and check if there is fuel in the carb by draining the carb. The carb was full .
I could imagine that the problem is related with the engine temperature or the CDI. I bought a used CDI and replaced it with my old, but no change .
I have measured the ignition coil and spark plug head and all seems fine.
Any good ideas how to find the problem?
Sorry for my bad English.
Regards from Denmark

What’s the carb setup on the 92? Still ydis?
As it’s about a minute, I’d look at fuel blockage in the fuel lines and tank filters, or even the breather in the tank. But to my mind it’s similar to how mine would behave if I don’t get the enriching right on start up. She needs choke when cold but if left on fully would die like you have described. She has to be adjusted back in at the right time, then no choke when she’s ready and warm.
Also if it is ydis, is the float bowl refilling fast enough?

XTZ660 does not have a CDI but a battery powered TCI. I would look into a poor electrical connection or test with a fresh or auxiliary battery (via jumper cables). The voltage may still be enough to turn the starter, but on idle may creep down below the voltage treshold for the ignition. Easy enough to test.

The carb setup is still 100% original and i just tested the amount of fuel in the carb bowl when the engine stops. I used a new fuel line direct to the carb and stopped the line when the engine stopped. I drained the carb bowl and it was full.
I will now try the electric parts with connectors and wires. And with a new battery .
Thanks to Dannybach and Andy . I will update with the results.

Mystery solved.
And i´m feeling so stupid.
But i followed your advice's, took halve of the bike apart . Added a fresh and auxiliary battery . Checked carb and almost any wire and plug.
I also took the spark plug out (again) and it looked fine but when i cleaned it, there was a unusual colour on the back of the plus tip. That was a very fine crack in the isolation. New spark plug and now it is running perfect.
Thanks you all for your help
