1VJ carb - Is this one repairable?

This recently came into my possession.

It looks like water ingress into the cap of the secondary carb., but a lot of it's more like a brown chalk than any rust I've seen before.

The slide is seized, and the only thing I can think of is to soak it in some rust remover.

The primary carb seems OK, just some white powder came out. I didn't think I'd ever get the float valve seat out, but it came out quite easily. Overall all jets / mechanicals etc seem fairly good condition. Believe it or not.

The brown chunks are out of the top of the secondary carb,

I have been using a cheap ultrasonic cleaner for aluminium parts - brilliant for carbs and not expensive

Yeah the sonic tanks will do a good job, then soak it in solvent overnight and airline it all clear after. I reckon with new seals etc she’ll be lovely.

I have an ultrasonic, and I've used it a lot in the past, but I didn't think it would touch this, so straight into rust dissolving solution it went.
The brown look is just the photo, it's bright silver, after a quick wire brushing.



Next the primary carb, in the sonic. What solution are you lot using for that? I've used soapy water before, which works, but it takes several 30 minute sessions. And when you refer to solvent, which one's the best?

Vinegar in water is one cheap fluid. Used it on mine as a trial. (Thought sonic cleaners were bullshit before I tried one). Worked well.

I have tried a few different solutions, from parts cleaning fluid, just water and lemon based floor cleaning liquid (dont tell the wife). Water works ok but something with a cleaner is fine. I would be cautious with vineger or anthing with salts as the stainless tank would probably be eaten away over time.

I'm using deionised water with some ecomentalist washing up liquid. Not had a problem with it and seems to work well. I'm surprised that water alone works well - I thought the detergent would be needed to hold the oil based grunge. I've considered some isopropyl alcohol in the mix to help dissolve the hydrocarbons, but it doesn't seem necessary.
I do recommend the rust dissolver, if required, beforehand- it doesn't affect the aluminium or the rubber and cleans up the steel / galvanised parts really well.
