Oil consumption levels

Post by edwardbgill »

I’ve done a bit of scouting around online and I’m struggling to find information on what kind of oil consumption XT600 owners generally experience.

What do people find their consumption levels to be and under what circumstances (I.e. riding conditions, known wear and tear to the engine)?

I’m particularly interested in the views of 3TB and 4PT owners - I have a 1992 3TB and a 1983 34L with a 4PT engine.

Thanks,

Ed

I don’t think it uses much internally. But externally, until I strip her again, she almost lubes her own chain😁. Clutch actuator seal. Sprocket seal. Barrel.

Hi,

Ive had a 4pt a few years ago, it was fairly high mileage, I used it for all sorts, it was a commuter bike, lots of green laneing and occasional touring within the UK. I sold it with 55,000 miles on the clock, so will have been getting a bit worn out, but ran perfectly fine. It definitely used oil, cant remember exactly, but about 200ml every 300 miles, depending on use.

I currently have a 1988 3aj Tenere, it was low mileage when I bought it, 1800, now has 27,000 and has used oil the whole time, not as bad as the 4pt, but not far behind, maybe 200ml every 500 miles. It also gets ridden off road regularly, but have also done some decent touring on it with long stretches of motorways, which are not good for oil consumption.

I am using Castrol Power1 10w/40 semi synthetic oil. Possibly mineral oils are better for oil consumption Ive heard.

The general consensus Ive heard is that they all use a bit of oil, you just have to assess how much is too much.

Hope that is of some help.

Thanks

Peen
