Hesitation 1996 xt600e 4pt

Post by sandlover »

Upon fitting my new carb to head inlet rubbers and after cleaning out my carbs and resetting my float height and setting the pilot screw to 2.5 turns out the bike seems to have a slight stall and hesitancy at around 2500 to 3000 revs, if i rev hard through the rev range there seems no problem and the bike flys also if i hold neutral throttle above or below the said rev range all seems fine its just a problem between 2500 to 3000.
Also if i set my tickover to 1400rpm there is still a slight reluctance for the revs to drop as quickly as you would expect but if i have tickover at around 1000 to 1200 she revs and returns to tickover in the right manner.
As of yet i haven't adjusted the pilot screw while the bike is running to get my best tickover so maybe this could help i will need to find a mini screwdriver to do this job.
I must add i bought this bike with bad running problems so i guess it could be anything other than the carbs.
any help much appreciated.

Your mini screwdriver may sit in your toolbox already, look for a screwdriver bit :-)

Easiest to adjust using a screwdriver angle adapter.

https://www.google.com/search?q=screwdr ... le+adapter

Original screw part numer is 51Y-14105-00 which from a picture search looks like a blade type philips head

Other carb settings all ok? Second carb opening measurement, needle heights middle, fuel level in bowl? And correct sized main jet for the area?
If it’s part throttle, it could be over lean at that position. A dropped needle may do that. If low running is clean, and you can cruise below 2000, then open it up and it pulls well, it’s great, leave the pilot and float alone, just look at the needle and second carb.

Ive set the second carb to open at 6.5mm the diaphragm is subtle with no tears or holes and everything set as per manual.
I did turn around the coasting enricher diaphragm and went through re adjusting the throttle cables and turned the pilot out to 3.5 turns and the bike is running much better with just a slight dip/loss sort of flat spot but a lot less pronounced as before.
The bikes a swiss import so maybe i should have put the english spec jets in before reassembly, is there a way to find the english spec?.
Is there anything specific to look for with the second carb as ive not dealt with anything like it before.
thanks for the advice.

Yes mate, the standard pilot is 46, you may need to go up with an aftermarket exhaust but probably not. Main jet is 145 standard, and 140, 150 if needed (official), second carb is 125. The roller contacts the lever to open the second at 7mm of opening of primary carb, so that’s close. All needles in the middle notch. The fuel height in the bowl is the funny one to check. Carbs level( bike lifted) 6-8mm below top of bowl.
Once they’re on, leave em alone!😁
Screwed mine up when she was running great, as I wanted “just a little more at the top”, and blocked half the holes trying a new sonic cleaner. Whoops. Another rebuild.

Just had a brain fart sorry, I was sizing up 1vj. Autopilot. The later engines went up a little bit in jet size I think. I’ll have a scout.

Cmsnl list the stuff still for sale too. Mostly unavailable in Fowler’s parts for some reason. 46 pilot. 120/130 or 140 main jet (1vj are 140/145/150, 145 working fine so I’d start with middle), 120 secondary carb jet.
The other settings are the same, fuel height/float height etc. 🍺

Great stuff mate, i think the mains 130 and when i look on the swiss model specs the pilots 46 so i imagine it will be this but i didnt look so dont know for sure.
I can't do the fuel height as the drain is stuck in and i didnt want to break anything but the floats are at 27mm, by no means is the bike running too bad i just seek perfection.
I wonder if i adjust the cam for the secondary carb to open a little later may give a result.
