Solenoid clicking but the bike wont start

Post by Linupo »

Hello all,
So this problem of mine started after the winter. In the early spring I decided to take my bike for a ride, but to my surprise the starter would not crank over, only the solenoid was clicking. My dad helped me push start the bike, ant the problem dissapeared for a while. I have been riding for most of the spring without any problems. Last week, the problem accured again, after siting in the garage for a few days it wouldnt start, after I click the button and only the solenoid would make the clicking sound. I tried connecting the bike to my car battery, because I thought the battery might be old and no longer capable of starting the bike, still, the bike would not turn over. So had to push start the bike once again. While we were riding with my friends, they helped me push start the bike twice. Sometimes the starter turns, sometimes it does not. Maybe somebody has had the same problem? I checked the voltage of the battery, it showed 12.5 volts, when not running, I assume that is good. I would appreciate any tips on how to check if the solenoid is faulty, if the starter is faulty.
Thanks for your help!

You could try bypassing the starter solenoid & bridge between your positive terminal on your battery to the starters connection post with a jumper lead, if the starter turns the engine over then its your starter solenoid at fault.

If the engine does not turn over, it could be the starter but it could also be a duff battery.

Or simpler: bridge between the two big connectors on the selenoid (the bolted ones, usually) which will do the same as the selenoid should.
As with Mezos tip: it will simply crank the starter, no matter what. So make sure no gear is engaged, as no security switches will work.

I had (maybe) the same problem. When I press the start button, the green neutral light loses power but no sign from the starter. But i never took attention to the solenoid sound. I will try to test it as suggested :)
