clutch problems

hi all,
i was out on my xt660z yesterday doing some very intense lanes. when my clutch gave up on me, when i start my bike up and put it in to gear and let my clutch out the bike moves a little but not much to the point if i pull it bk it don't move. and when i rev it up it goes only at 5mph and red lines the engine. i was just woundering weather it deffantily the clutch and nothing else as when it happened i was stuck in the mud and had to give the bike some welly to get out but also heard and clanking noise which sounded like the chain had come off.
also why this happened my rpm clock was playing up and now its stuck at 30000 mph even when the bike it turned off.

Have you tried adjusting the clutch from the handlebar lever? pull the rubber boot back & adjust it.

Its either slipping (worn out plates) or somethings busted if it went all of a sudden, did you have any slippage when you was out riding?

no i has no slipping at all i got stuck in very bad mud and had to give the bike loads on welly to get out. i have adjusted clutch at lever and at engine and no joy.

Well you're going to have to take the cover off & inspect the plates, if you lay the bike on its side you can remove the cover without draining the oil, well you can do that on the earlier bikes & i`m guessing its the same on the later ones? iv`e never worked on one.
