3AJ Carb Needle Arrangement

Post by XTLuke »

Hi There,

I'm doing some maintenance on my carb and am interested in some pics of what the needle arrangement is for both the primary and secondary carbs.
I am using Mezo's translated 3AJ Carb guide and the layout of the needle, washer, clip and spring assemble is not the same as what I see on my carb.
Does anyone have any pictures of what the exact sequence of this arrangement is?
It can partly be seen it the exploded carb view fiches that are available on the various sites,
but no where clear enough to check the sequence correctly.

Can anyone help with this?

Bike is 1990 3AJ, German Bike with the altitude compensator gizmo on it and fuel pump still in place.

Thanks,
Luke

Hi everyone,

The question is old, I know it, but I have exactly the same problem :hot:

Image

On this picture the part number 4 (rubber ring) is under the needle clip. But when I dismounted mine carb the part 4 was on the top of the needle clip.

Which is the good position PLEASE?

Secondary needle is pushed up by spring. Clip on needle, middle position standard usually. Drop spring in first, then flat washer, needle with clip, plastic washer, disc (make sure hole is clear). Screw down.
Primary needle is pushed down by the spring assembly into the slide. Middle position again.
Pics won’t upload again.

Thanks a lot. :congrats:
So the fig 54 on the carb tutorial by Graccula is wrong.

For the primary needle is the fig 47 also wrong ? On this pic we can see : throttle slide then needle with clip then washer then plastic connector then spring.
And on my carb it is : throttle slide then washer then needle with clip....

Can you also tell me the correct position for the primary needle?

Thanks a lot
Franck.

The pics are all a bit vague in the catalogue I know. Normal position is middle, at least for 1vj. My secondary is one up now, with drilled air hole and enlarged jet. Just picks up a little better on wider throttle. I keep primary as standard as possible, but I do have the larger option(150) main jet, and a 48 pilot, due to exhaust etc.
3AJ jets are slightly larger as a starting point.
Best start, idle and performance is correct whichever size you end up with. You’ll just know. 👍
