New member with 3yf and questions!

Post by GNT biker »

Hi all GNT biker here,
Just joined the group having picked up a brace of off road Yamaha’s found hidden away in Spain.
The Tenere or XTz660 is complete and thankfully I have now got it running after a few days in the shed fiddling with the electrics which seem to have had dried out in the heat.

I am planning on a sympathetic restoration but my normal projects are usually British and a lot older.

I was hoping the more experienced members could help me with a few early queries.

1. All the fairings on my one are pretty poor, any recommendations for new or copied bits?
Also wondering how different the twin headlight super tenere fairings are to the 3yf as there seems to be some nice Rally versions about for the super T.

2. Ordered everything for a carb rebuild but haven’t come across these dual port carbs before, I have a manual but any useful warnings on the job would be welcome.

3. I should have it down to the frame fairly soon and plan to do a touch up of the rubbed areas, anyone know where to get the right spray paint to match the frame colour or is it a case of shopping about? It’s silver at the moment and looks original.

I am based in central Essex in the UK so if anyone is nearby for help and support that would also be good to know.

Not much riding being done at the moment but hoping you all stay safe wherever you are.

Welcome GNT!

1. New fairings can be bought from JRE in Australia. They're on Ebay, but it's better to just email him. I'v ordered a set for my XTZ750, but am stil waiting for delivery (very anxiously smile: )

2.You can see the dual carbs as 1 normal carb and 1 CV carb. I believe you can adjust when the CV carb kicks in, but that should be in the manual.

3. I can't help you with the paint, but perhaps another member can.

Greetings from the Netherlands!

Hi Bowler

Thanks for all the info I will have a look at the fairing options and once I build up the courage I will have a go at the carb.

If I ever work out how to post pictures I may even add a few

Worth investing in an ultrasonic cleaner if you don`t have one already?

Hi and welcome
I to am a newbie and have just purchased my first 3yf where did you get your carb service parts from?
I don’t suppose you have a spare carb you want to sell have you?
I’m just across the bridge in Medway Kent so if you know of any local sources of parts it would be appreciated
Thanks Ian

Hi Ian
Welcome to the gang, :welcome2:

I picked up my carb bits from wemoto online they do all the buts separately so you can just order what you need and I think they do a service kit.
For general parts they also have a good stock so I have also picked up some consumables from them.
I am only 30 mins from Colchester so if I need frame or bodywork I tend to try motorcycle recycle in Colchester they break loads of bikes and you can set an alert on their site for bits you need.
I have been restoring old British bikes for a while now so I have local powder coating/painting contacts and wheel building and other engineering needs are all done locally by people I have used before.
Hope that helps
