I'm being thick… rear wheel alignment help needed

I must be the thickest person to join this forum, but for the life of me I cannot work out how to align and secure the back wheel of my 34L/55W.

It has the cam adjusters rather than the sliding thingy (can't think of the right word at the moment) and from what I can see (from both Clymer and microfiche) is that it is just the tightness of the rear wheel nut and the brake drum plate sliding onto the swing arm retaining groove that holds the wheel in place? The 2 x pins at the back of the arm are just to stop the wheel rolling out when the nut is loosened I presume?

So, am i being thick? Is there not any more to it than that? Doesn't seem very safe to me?

Also, from a fresh chain and sprockets, what setting should the cam adjuster be at 1 or 9 or in between?

Sorry if I am truly being a dumb arse and have missed something very, very basic.

Here`s how it looks and its the same on all my 34L`s.



Ideally you want the chain at the right tension with lots of adjustment left as you chain will stretch over time,
so you may need to remove a link to get it ideal place (start of the adjustment).

Just a quick further note:
It is possible to cut the chain too short on a 34L with the standard gearing. The axle will then be almost at the front of the slot and there will be next to no clearance between the tyre and inside of swingarm.
Standard (15/39 sprockets) starting point is about 1/3 to halfway back down the slot.
Stones then make a mess of the swingarm and the oh so precious rubber boot over the shock linkage.
And yes, the torque (and associated axial preload) on the axle is all that keeps it in the swingarm!
Of course, the chain and brake linkage help a little too

Yamaha specified torque: 100 Nm = bloody tight.

The cams are there in the pic i posted, they are on the inside of the swingarm not on the outside like on the later Tenere's.

Do you have a picture we can see?

The snail cams on the alluminium swing arms go between the swing arm & wheel, you can see the snail cam adjuster levers sticking up on Mezos' pics.
On steel swing arms the snail cams go on the outside of the 'arm.

In an ideal world, using corresponding notches on both 'cam adjusters will give you correct wheel alignment & rotating the cams adjusts chain tension.
There are various tools on the market to check chain alignment (laser etc.) I just put a straight edge against my rear sprocket & adjust 'til it lines up with the front

See, I told you I was thick!

Now I see. The cams on the inside makes perfect sense as I thought I might be missing a small spacer. And as my swinger is very light, I am safe to assume its aluminium aren't i?

Now then, anyone know where I can get those little sliders from? My microfiche appears to be for the steel swing arm version.

Cheers for the fiche link. My fiche is definitely a 55W one.

So, as it looks like my bike definitely has the later arm and so wshould have the snail cam adjusters on the outside not the inside, is there a technique to getting it all lined up? Should I start at setting 9 or setting 1?

I thought it would be simple, set the cams to the same number, pushed them hard up against the stubby stop on the swing arm and went to tighten the axle castle nut only to find the bloody cams had moved all over the place.

Probably me being thick again, but any clues would be greatly appreciated
