Took clutch out I held against it using actionmans rag trick! How do you hold against the centre bit to get the big nut off without breaking the fingers of the basket

The camshaft and rockers look ok to me

What are all these wee holes? The piston looks brand new

Pitting is normally a sign of detonation, id like to have seen the old piston. :bigyikes:

May as well pop out the valves & check the seats, and fit a 3AJ oil pump 1988 & newer (don't limit your search to Tenere`s) all XT`s from 88 onwards all used the 3AJ pump.

There's a proper tool to hold the basket while you undo the nut....

FFS I'll never copy that! Will try and make up a more "agricultural" version.
Can I still use the head with the pitting, is it harmless?
Cheers Iain

Edit : Thanks Mezo have found it on eBay for £27

Yep some guys fashion one out of an old clutch plate, but it will never feel as good as the real tool.

I don't think the pitting will affect anything, if it was detonation (pre ignition) it may have pitted the valve`s face also? possible.

Googled the part no. on your piston, looks like you have a wiseco forged piston.
The 09700 part of the number is the bore, 97mm, so it's had a +2mm rebore.

Your next question should be why was it detonating (pinking)?
It might be worth checking the squish clearance (the distance between the top of the piston & the cylinder head) when you rebuild it.

Those marks are not from detonation.

They are from a foreign object bouncing up and down at 5000 rpm. Could be a small screw or something.
Would have also damaged the piston, hence the new Wiseco and rebore.
