43f VS 34L

Hi everyone!

I am a new member today, and I am looking forward to this membership!

I had a BMW R 1100 GS 1998 for 5 years now. Before that I owned a 34L model. Just sold the BMW and wish to buy a nice 34L machine again.

Here in Sweden its seems to be impossible to find a 34L modell. But you could find the xt 600-43f .

My first question in this forum would be, if I buy a xt600-43f and change the small tank to a big 34L Tenere tank and also change the saddle to a34L saddle.

Would this automaticly turn the 43f it into a 34L......or is there other more differents?

Essentially its the same bike but swapping the tank/seat over is a problem, the mounting points for the 34L parts are not the same as the 43F.

I have seen it done by a guy in the USA but involved welding & fabrication, and,,,it will still be technically a 43F under the skin, there are 34L`s for sale in France, Germany & Italy. :tenere:

Also check out Oliver`s build, he did something similar to a TT.

I figured that it might just not be that easy. I just had to check it out to be sure.

Yeas I have found some realy nice 34L:s here in Europe on different sites. Some of them where worn and torn but to a much lesser price.
The range is from 350 Euro to 1800 Euro. I am now trying to start communications with both french and german sellers. Interesting becouse I dont speak neither. So I am trusting in the Google translation.

I will see how it turns out. Its going to be exciting. If you know of any nice one, I would appreciate if you could give me some directions.

This site in France has some bargains, but it very hard to do business with the French? they do not answer emails?

You will have more luck in Germany or Italy but the prices may be slightly higher or take a chance & drive to France if you spot a bargain.

I've bought most of my parts on the French site Mezo. They are very reluctant to do business with people from abroad as the site leboncoin.fr does not have a payment fonctionnalities. Most of the payments in France are still done using the chèques that are emitted by the French banques. It's always a hassle to get a payment from somebody abroad. However, some of the professionnals can accept the paypal payments.

So to buy on the leboncoin.fr you should : preferebly speak French and have an account in the Franch bank - not easy to do from abroad though

This is realy super good information for me and thats probably why the french guys did not answer. Fortunaly for me I have a very good friend that is a total motorhead that speak french fluently. He lived in Paris for 8 years.He buys cars from france and germany now and then.

I will let him call them up and talk directly to the guy and we will see how that works.

Probably it will be easier when one make a good contact first on the phone, and then travel to france with cash money and buy the bike on location and drive home with it. At least thats my plan.

A very good plan, be patient though as sometimes there is nothing for sale and the next month you are spoiled for choice.

34l is not like 43f......
50T & 55w are maybe like 43f.
it changes many things from 83 model to 84's :
1) the crankshaft has different size for bearings
2)the first gear is the same of 550xt , more short than the 84 models
3) final transmission has different ratio ( shorter on 34l )
4) carburators has different settings , 34l more difficult to start and more nervous like torque ( and you cannot use 84 model's settings on 34l )
5) differnt cdi's
6) alluminium swingarm on 34l and iron on 84 models
7) different setting of suspension , 34l is lower on the front than the 84 models ( 50t and 55w had a double spring in front fork ) and the back suspension had no hydraulic settings on 34l
imho 84 models are better like comfort and strongness , but '83 34l is a very differnt bike , like a nasty bull .....
for my experience best xt model is the 90 2kf with grey motor
