Yep you can drop the engine forward, take off the rocker cover, release the cam chain tensioner & then tilt the cam out sideways.
I can go through it with you on Skype Dan, its not that big a deal trust me.
Mezo.

Dan its normal for the engine to roll a bit, doesn't mean the timing's out... & besides you don't need to be exact with the 'T' mark to check your tappets... just make sure the cam lobes are pointing downwards......
Try again but this time remove the spark plug (the engine won't roll as much without the plug in too) put a pencil or something in the plug hole till you feel the top of the piston & turn the engine over till its at TDC....

The future is not what it used to be....
Re: Just Dan's little resto on a 34L Tenere'
Hi Geoff, This is the process I am already using. Plug out and and using a scribe to gently rest on the piston to see where TDC is. It is looking like TDC is where the timing mark is resting in the photo. If I roll the engine back to the T mark. The piston is still coming up the bore.GeoffD wrote:Dan its normal for the engine to roll a bit, doesn't mean the timing's out... & besides you don't need to be exact with the 'T' mark to check your tappets... just make sure the cam lobes are pointing downwards......

Oh well eat humble pie.
The timing is not out at all. Had a peek under the rocker cover to if the timing marks line up and the lobes are down.

Re: Just Dan's little resto on a 34L Tenere'
I notice there is a bit of excess sealant there Dan, i have read a few horror stories about about them little worms making there way in to an oilway & blocking the passage of oil.
Before i fired up my bike i had said to Danny about my concerns & showed him where the tacho drive goes, i had put whey to much sealant on there and it was blocking oil comming in to the cam (it would have starved the cam dry) lucky Danny had said "Dont risk it lets take it off".
You only need the thinest smear of sealant, but pay attention to the end of the cam where the tacho drive goes.

Understand what you are saying. That is why we use Loctite 515 Master gasket. 515 only goes off on contact of 2 surfaces. Any excess dissolves into the oil preventing block oil ways.
just checking the valves. Both inlet valves were the tight side at .06mm

Thats probably it Dan!, the wear on my cam stopped my bike from starting at all! other guys on the forum that shall not be mentioned have told me that aswell, check your valves are in spec first!Just Dan wrote:Understand what you are saying. Re: Just Dan's little resto on a 34L Tenere'
Yes sir can I have one of those.....
While I had the rocker cover off yesterday. I heard a very faint "tink" . Had a good look a round with a head torch and mirror and could not see any thing in with the valves. After tightening the rocker cover back up. I notice the little aluminium screw on bit for the spark plug is missing. XR650 plug leads need the spark plug cap to clip on to that screw on bit. Looks like I will be pulling the rocker cover off again.
Rode the RS out to yammie dealer this morning to pick up and oil filter , o rings and that special bolt on the bottom of the oil fiter. Giving the RS a good handful of throttle exiting a roundabout cranking left. The rear wheel spun up big time just like a GP bike.
Always some thing weird happening around my place. Looked out the lounge room window to see my next doors elderly dog Dilbert sitting on the roof.....
