Bouyed up by the advice from Eric & the advice from PhilB & Mezo, I made progress tonight & feel like I'm turning a corner... I'll be off up the straightaway when my frame is blasted & painted!

New clocks ordered & all the footpegs etc cleaned up & painted!

Decided to see what lurked under the paint, stripped one side to find the usual repairs, will strip the rest and take it all back to bare metal.

A box full of bits finally arrived from boatnet, speedo & tacho cables,seals,camchain,rear blinker mounts and a heap of other stuff! Now I can re- assemble the motor. Need some advice on fitting the crank to the left side case, the manual says to heat the case then use a special puller or take it to a Yamy dealer. I know you must be real careful not to distort the fresh crank pin balance however the old bearing didn't seem real tight in the case so I was going to put some bearing lock on the housing and see if it slips in. Any thoughts?

Warning..........
Do not use ANYTHING on the crank bearings.
The crank is secured on one side by the drive gear. The other side must be allowed to "float" according to expansion and contraction of the cases.
Just warm the case (80c) in the oven before assy and everything will slide into place.

Thanks for your help! Should I remove the bearings that have a seal (as I've put in all the new bearings already) before putting in the oven or will they tolerate the heat?

Eric, think about your question!!!
The engine runs at temps above 80c all day long. The seals are designed to handle this.
In fact the seals are good for about 180c.

New switch gear and grips arrived from CMSNL, also I took my carby to get hydrablasted and I can tell you it came back better then new! Well worth the $80!


Now I need some info on some wiring ( don't worry ActionMan I've had a liberal dosing of German Pilsner, so no stupid questions tonight) the 2 white wires that come out of the rectifer and connect to the generator does it mater which one connects to the other as mine have been cut and I don't know which goes where.

I also need a carby kit, any suggestions, O-rings gaskets etc. I see Yambits do one but say it's for 87 on, are they different?

Eric are you using the TT or XT alternator?
The XT has 3 white wires and is 3 phase.
The TT I think has only 2 wires and is single phase.

To answer your first question, because the electricity is AC as it leaves the alternator, it does not matter which way you connect
the wires to the rectifier/regulator.
