Has anyone tried mixing and matching the 1VJ stator and 3AJ stator? I think i have a spare from when i first bought the 3AJ back in 2011.

All ignition parts 3AJ and 1VJ are interchangeable (rotor stator pickups), there are only 2 or 3 different plugs which connect CDI to main loom, but AFAIR having the same wire colors.

I swapped the stators with the 3AJ stator I had since I was getting better ohms readings from the 3AJ one.

Here's a shot of the 1VJ stator I pulled. It looks like someone has added some solder to it, and the wires were a different color than the harness.




Of course in the process of removing the phillips head bolts I royally stripped one of the heads, which I then tried to drill out and then the head broke off. It was a big old cluster*&$. So I had to drill out the hole and put in an insert. Thankfully everything drilled out and inserted straight and the new hex head bolts went in without much coercion.





However I still could not get the damn bike to fire up. I checked for spark against the fins and was getting a blue spark, but even with starter fluid sprayed directly into the spark plug hole it wouldn't sputter or backfire or anything.

Next I thought it was compression but a jaunt down a long hill in 3rd gear with WOT gave me a pretty solid reading.



So I bought a new battery since the old one had sat for a year and would not charge up enough to even turn over the starter.

Do these e-start/kick start bikes have the same stator pickups as the kickstart only bikes, meaning can they run without a battery? The spark with the old battery seemed kinda weak so I'm hoping that maybe the issue is with a low voltage battery.

I have a technical question about the placement of the pickups inside the case cover.

The pickups have a small round drop down tab that fits inside a larger hole inside the case and then the bolt goes through it all to secure it.

When i had to add an insert into that hole in the case the small round tab on the pickup now hits the insert and the pickup no longer sits fully flush against the flat surface of the case the way it did before. It’s raised by about 1/3rd of the small tab’s height.

My question is whether or not this will affect how the bikes runs. My issue is that i have an odd stumble at idle that goes away as the revs increase. I recently cleaned the carb and my fuel screw is out 3 turns. It may still be a bit lean but this pickup abnormality has me wondering if i need to open the case back up.

Some dude posted this on the local craigslist today for a thousand dollars and of course i had to go look at it. And buy it. And i did.

It’s mostly original but with some odd modifications. The front fairing is aftermarket or something. The fairing decals are close to matching the tank but it’s made of fiberglass and has a double headlight. The tank looks like it had been cut and rewelded at the bottom and new petcocks were added but without cutoff valves for some reason. The engine has rattle can black with a nice patina of overspray on the frame.

But the best part is it came with two Givi Monokey side hard cases and back rack.

The previous owner suggested the bike was an Italian police bike once upon a time but I don’t have documentation to show that. But it does have a US title and is currently registered.

Got the bike buttoned up and took it out for its first ride this weekend.





I have to say i really dislike the Belgarda fairing. It is a giant pain to mount and i find myself doing everything i can think of to avoid taking it off. Does it look nice? Yeah i guess, but i think i prefer ease of access to the inner workings of the bike to a slick appearance.

I’m still having some questions stemming from my doubt on the pickup coil orientation after adding an insert to the left hand side case. I’m constantly adjusting the idle screw to accommodate high then low idle and I’m not yet sure if it’s carburetion or electrical.

Can anyone recommend a good way to check for misfire while the engine is running? Is this what a timing light is for?
