New bike!

Post by scottieh »

Someone here in Utah had been holding out on a 1VJ Tenere, until today!

Some dude posted this on the local craigslist today for a thousand dollars and of course i had to go look at it. And buy it. And i did.

It’s mostly original but with some odd modifications. The front fairing is aftermarket or something. The fairing decals are close to matching the tank but it’s made of fiberglass and has a double headlight. The tank looks like it had been cut and rewelded at the bottom and new petcocks were added but without cutoff valves for some reason. The engine has rattle can black with a nice patina of overspray on the frame.

But the best part is it came with two Givi Monokey side hard cases and back rack.

The previous owner suggested the bike was an Italian police bike once upon a time but I don’t have documentation to show that. But it does have a US title and is currently registered.

Good find, does that mean you have just about the only two Tenere's in the States?

I know of one 34L in Los Angeles, who if ever sells will hopefully sell to this nut job here. I’m currently hoarding two xt200’s, a 250, 500, two xt600’s, and now two Teneres, plus a half dozen bins of engine parts.

Why is there an Italian kit for a 1VJ for sale in the USA, doesn't make sense?

I rebuilt the carb on the bike and put it all back together but the damn thing won’t start even with starter fluid. So i checked the spark and it’s pretty weak. I’m currently kicking it over and not using the e-start because I don’t want to spend money on a battery just yet. I only see spark every few kicks and it’s quite small.

So I’m checking the stator now. Does anybody have the stator’s resistance specs for the 1VJ? I have the 3AJ service manual and it gives some numbers that my tests come close to but the source coil resistance is low so i wanted to see if there was a 1VJ specific rating i should know about.

Current readings are

Source coil 139 ohms. 3AJ Manual says 160-240
Pickup coils 105 and 114 ohms. Manual says 90-130.
Charging coil 0.218. Manual says 0.2-0.6.

So my source coil is reading low. The source coil connector looks burned and the wires are not the original color.

Also ignition coil reading are

Secondary coil manual says 3,800-5,800 ohms
Plug cap with boot is 14,000 ohms
Plug cap without boot is 4,500 ohms

Primary coil resistance is 0.4. Manual says 0.15-0.21.

My 3AJ primary coil also tests high around 0.4 ohms.

Has anyone tried mixing and matching the 1VJ stator and 3AJ stator? I think i have a spare from when i first bought the 3AJ back in 2011.
