Asked the question in the restauration blog, but no answers yet, so I try here:
When respoking 34L wheels, the hub and rim are apparently dead centre in the middle... so no offset. BUT: Can I measure this off the hub, or do I need to take all the spacers, brake plate (rear wheel) and the like into account? Or does it not matter as the hub is also exactly in the middle of the swing arm / forks?
Can anyone advise how to do it before I start and get iot wrong..!?

I will measure a front and back wheel on Tuesday and post a picture.

I am going thru the rebuilding of a back wheel and have taken a load of measurements for the rebuilder. Unfortunately, I sent all the dimensions to him, but i recall that from my calculations, it looks like there is about a 5mm offset towards the cushblock side.
If I'm wrong..... please let me know ASAP!!

Paul, I just re-checked a back wheel and confirm the FLANGES with the spoke holes are exactly centered with the rim.
The wheel I am using is an 85 Tenere rear with drum brake.
That is, there is no offset.

I grabbed a rear wheel and checked the measurements for you.
Use a straight edge and a vernier caliper ( no excuse not to have a vernier, they come on special at ALDI for $19.99)
Brake side is 23.88 mm and drive side is 46.65 mm. That is after subtracting the thickness of the straight edge.

You got confirmation on the rear wheel from Action Man, here is a measurement on the front:
Right hand side, from the outer edge of the hub to the outer edge of the rim: 22.5mm. Left hand side; from the hub flange where disc sits to outer of the rim: 24.5mm.
Close enough to say the rim is central to the hub. The left side is a machined surface, the right just the end of a casting, my wheel is *very* original, read 'rusty'.

Thanks to all for measuring and letting me know... I will have a crack at it over the Easter weekend.
If it ends up half as bad as the days when I tried to pull wobbles out of my pushbike wheels (i.e. 30 years ago, when I had no skills) - those days the more I adjusted the spokes, the worse it got...
Surely I can do better these days...
