its almost working again......

Post by marcm »

after a little birthday rectifying 3rd and 5th gear, getting tank painted, deciding a plan for exhaust and making pannier frames for boxes my 34l is almost ready for its next little adventure.
only remains for weather to heal up as its ff....ing freezing in most of northern europe at moment, put my oil tank back on and make mid pipe for exhaust..and tank decals..
this is not a restoration so its not got loads of new old stock bits and parts replated as im only gonna ride it and fuck it up and ruin it again...

oh and worst of all ive stolen the front mudguard off my yz 465 to put on as hopefully im off out of uk very soon..the rear silencer was i think either an r6 or a thundercat and it was rolling around under bench so it seemed a good plan as only had to heat mounting bracket and bend for it to clear rear tyre when suspension squidged and my nice fresh sidepanel..

Did you make them pannier frames then? and the front headlight bag holder?

Would have made a good write up in itself on how to do it, any close up pics of where the mounting points are please.

yes made the frames, had a first attempt filling tube with sand to bend and it was disaster, then had a take 2 go using a plumbers spring in the tube and large socket in the vise to bend the tubes around,i was astounded how easy it was to do bends.
the hardest part was working out the relative lengths the make the ends meet,i would have posted some pics on here but my laptop is cranky at moment and ive been busy boy.
the front rack was a way of using up some tube i had left while i was on a bit of a roll,if time wasnt as pressing i would of had the powdercoated same as my frame rather than just painting them, will try and take some pics of with the boxes on it tomorrow.
ive used the rear footpeg mounts, the rack side mounts and made a loop going around the rear also mounting to frame where rack mounts so it all just fell into place with a little thought.
i would like an original type front mudguard at some point but its going to wait as ive just bought another early 80s yz 125....
will take some picures of the mid pipe when i make it this week....if its not too shocking to own up to??

One little tipp?
connect both rack holder with a connecting rod behind the plate holder. You will kiss the dirt or tar sooner or later and with boxes on one side will bend in easy from what i see now.You can weld two small parts and make holes on them to put a screw for connecting that bracket.
The bike looks great man!
