Geoff or Mezo, can you explain the starter motor cable trick? I've never really looked inside a starter motor and this seems to be a good one you guys use over and over, so I'd like to know a little about it. Thanks.

Ye Olde Cable tie trick came about when i did my starter, i was struggling to hold all four brushes back while i inserted the armature up through inside, unless you have a whole bunch of people helping you?



Just push the brushes back & hold them with small (mini ties) and the armature slides up inside, one man job.



If you look carefully you will see the cable ties right at the top of the brushes, this is to allow part of the armature to move in to position & once it gets a bite you can snip away the ties & push it fully in to place.

The yellow arrow is just pointing out not to get that wire trapped (short circuit).

Yep around that lip i had to much paint, and i did the same on the other end just in case.

+1 what Mezo said...another tip, don't put the cable ties around the brushes too tight, so when you enter the armature it'll push the ties off ....

Mez, Geoff, thanks for the starter tip. Although I was working on a DR650 starter, the trick worked a treat and I got the brushes back in no problem. With information and tips like this I'll be working on the Tenere like I actually know what I am doing! Thanks to the forum and thanks to its members!
