You should read Just Dan`s 34L restoration then.

Mezo,

where do you think I found out about you lot? I stumbled across Dan's work and he put me straight. I'll be going for soundness rather than an all-out restoration.
Started cleaning and checking out the bike today, and unfortunately its probably worse than it looks in the pics,... if that's possible. The back wheel has a crack at the weld, so rebuild there.... muffler is rotted out..... oil tank is stuffed...... headlamp cowl is stuffed, no side covers at all..... But I'm deterred yet.

But the key was in the ignition, so I guess that's something.

I've been busy ebaying and using a mate in Germany to buy the various bits missing from my bike. Picked up some front and rear guards, cdi, speedo drive, rear rack and tool box, blinkers, rubber boot thing for the swing arm, headlight. Where can I find a cowl (17F-28351-00-36)? Do Yamaha still hold stock? Side covers? Am I dreaming?

Now I'm starting to collect bits for my engine rebuild. The barrel is badly scored so I'm figuring a re-boring and over-sized piston. What's the general feel about Wiseco piston kits. I'll stick with std compression.

I'm yet to split the cases, but what gears are available new?

I've got to the stage where I'm steaming ahead.

I am progressing slowly (too slowly) with the fitting of a '91 xt600 E into my 34L. Have come up against a minor issue. The oil cooler used to sit where the starter motor now is. Has anyone out there mounted it elsewhere? I'm currently looking at forward of the tank on the RHS. There doesn't seem to be that many options.

suggestions please..... hopefully with pics.

I'll answer my own post!

No, it can't fit on the RHS forward of the fuel tank 'cos it'll foul with the forks on right lock, and the guard when on left lock.

I'm now thinking mounted in the same plane as original, but on a bracket beside the barrel above the stator, with a similar air scoop.

thoughts?

The factory guys mounted them under the headlight.

If you used a 1VJ headlight surround you may be able to fit it in under the headlight behind the louvers.??
Or custom make one to fit the oil cooler like they did on the factory bikes.

I will add something.
I'm in the process of installation Kickstarter to my XT 600 3tb/dj02 and I was forced to do the holes in the clutch cover. Everything fits together and interacts. That's how it looks:

The drill hole has a diameter of 20 [mm], while the sealing slot has a dimension of 30 [mm] and a depth of 8 [mm]. The last dimension, however, I do recommend the 7 [mm] buy sealant because only the dealer, as well as get it in the first store.

34L Engine rebuild in Oz - Cost?

Post by GeoffD »

That's not a 3TB case, they're already pre drilled for a kick starter. That case is a 4PT one
Also, using the 4PT case means you can't fit the de-compressor cable
The future is not what it used to be....

I do not know what it's like to end with these models at 96 but my bike on the frame appears 3TB model. Such as my engine was produced until the end of what I know. In any case, you can forget the automatic decompression, and the cable should be installed with the handle of the XT model 500, as well as from other motorcycles such as the Yamaha WR 450.
