Neutral Switch/Light

Hi, I have a 1987 1vJ thats had a new instrument cluster put in by previous owner but the Neutral Light doesn't work. How do I test the Neutral switch to rule that out? How do they work? Wiring diagram might help. Thanks from NZ

Before you even need to get any test kit out, put it in gear with the sidestand down. Try to start it ( eleccy) and see what happens if nothing, the switch is working. If it tries to fire, the circuit isn’t working. Be aware if it isn’t working it will try to move the bike so make sure you’re preventing that.

The circuit diagram is on here somewhere. The neutral is connected to the sidestand and clutch lever switch. Relay. And down to the neutral switch in the left of the engine. It’s an earth. If it’s failed there won’t be any difference in resistance in it if you change from neutral to a gear. Might just be the light though.
Do the easy “user” check above first against a wall or even better, the rear wheel off the ground.

No side stand switch, The model is actually a 1VL which must have been the Australian/NZ model that came with no side stand switch.

This can get complicated as some bikes used the CDI for its neutral - but in the first instance the green wire to the neutral switch - if you ground this it should light up with the ignition on.
