There are basically only 2 CDI types, with or without a side stand switch connector. Between models, e.g. 1VJ and 3AJ box are interchangeable if you adapt the connectors.

Early models like 34L, 55W, 43F, with no electric start and no side stand switch, have 9 wires as far as I am aware of.
Numbers on the box are
34L, 43F:
55U-50 / 070000-132 0 /
55U-85540-50-00 (parts number)
55U-51 / 070000-132 1
55U-85540-51-00 (parts number)
XT600K: 3YP-00 070000-2180 QAC18
Wires:
3 for the pickup (white-green, red and green)
2 for the CDI charging coil (brown, red)
1 for neutral indication (blue)
1 for engine stop (black-white)
1 for ground (battery negative terminal): black
1 for ignition: orange.
The high voltage spark will be generated in the ignition coil, triggered by the orange and black wire.

Later models like 2KF, 1VJ and 3AJ, with electric start and/or side stand switch, have 10 wires.
Numbers on the box are
1VJ: 1VJ-50 DENSO 070000-1520 QAB52
2RX: 1VJ-51 DENSO 070000-1521 QAB52
3AJ: ... -1810 QAB52
Wires:
3 for the pickup (white-green, red and green)
2 for the CDI charging coil (brown, red)
1 for neutral indication and clutch switch (blue)
1 for engine stop (black-white)
1 for the side stand switch: blue-Yellow
1 for ground (battery negative terminal): black
1 for ignition: orange.

You can swap CDIs between models, only you have to take care of the extra/missing wires which have to be connected or left open to fool the CDI to think its in the correct motorcycle.

As far as I am aware of, it goes like this:

To use a later CDI on an earlier model, connect the blue-yellow wire to the bleck wire, which will trick the CDI to think the side stand is up.

To use a earlier CDI on a later model, adapt a brake light switch to be closed with side stand down. The switch can be mounted near the seat, actuated by a long wire, attached to the side stand via a small hole drilled near the pivot point.
Connect white-black and black wire to the switch, and it will shut off the engine like the kill switch or ignition switch will do, when the side stand is down. You then can not kick the engine with side stand down (which anyway is not recommended due to extra wear).

The same is true when using an early CDI replacement like the Zeeltronic CDI from Slowenia, on a later model.
We did that for a 1VJ Tenere, just by modifying the side stand switch. The bike had no e-start though, which would complicate things. You have to use your own brain for that. There are systems to prevent the starter to engage when a gear is engaged, unless the clutch is actuated. This is done by an extra relay, a clutch switch and the neutral switch.
