Does drilling the hubs not weaken them, or do they have enough meat?

So we went from 8g to 6g that's two sizes larger, old British bikes tended to use uneven numbers where the Japanese used even numbers, and because they're double butted spokes the thinner part only actually went up to 9g.
In reality it's a tiny amount, there's also be a greater surface area of hub in contact with the spoke flange end. and the hubs are massively over engineered.

What colour blue did you use to get the best match to the Yamaha faraway Blue in powder on the frame? Was it the RAL5005 Signal Blue Ive seen mentioned?
Just asking as Im getting my 3aj frame done soon.

I won't be doing as thorough a job as you are, but I think I should make a start on mine soon, see if it can be done by next spring...(?)

And yes it's the legendary RAL 5005 Signal blue.
I'm really impressed with the colour and match but it does have a clear coat top which I hadn't done on previous bikes. That might make the colour pop a bit more than usual.

This 3rd 1VJ is taking shape, I've got her up on my Abba stand which makes it quite easy to move around and work on.
I put later switch gear on them, if I remember correctly I think they're off a Super Ten.
This obviously needs some rewiring and I use the click locks seen in the photo to make sure connections are correct and working before fitting the correct connectors, and tidying everything up...

So how much is original loom and how much is new wires?

The actual main loom basically remains the same.
Some new connectors are required, and different ways of combining the wires in connectors.
The new bits are the handlebar switches on both sides, which aren't massively different wire colourwise, the difficult one is the kill side as the original XT600 has 3 wires and the XTZ has four sometimes five.

Using later switch gear is definitely a good idea on these older, rarer bikes, its amazing how cheap you can pick some switchgear up for from more common bikes.

I think I used TDM switches on my 3aj and gained the function of a pass light and push cancelling indicators, but you can use pretty much any switchgear you want, just a case of figuring out the wring, they're just switches.
