Recently got my hands on a project xt660z. This poor girl has been used and abused! Mechanically lots needs doing fork oil sprockets chain you know the maintenance jobs.
The reason why its called a project bike is when you turn the key theres no fuel pump priming and if you hit the start button theres no spark. After investigating, the ecu wasn’t connected properly due to dirt/grease some how got into the connection. With this gone, the bike came to life and gave me two error codes, intake air pressure sensor and tilt sensor. Both have now been replaced however the symptoms still persist, the facebook groups are useless so im on the hunt for experts and their wisdom!
No prior history, 44k miles aftermarket pipe (cardboard used to cover hole in frame) the rest is standard. I think keys could have been replaced as the key symbol is telling me i’ve got the wrong key! I look forward to any and all replies as long as it isnt “google it”

Re: Non running xt660z
There are not many of these around on here, but someone may come along. There is a link to a long dead forum on here, it's no longer interactive but you may find some answers in there. I do seem to remember the wiring around the headstock could be problematic.

Re: Non running xt660z
Not a big lover of ECUs and fault codes etc, but recently had to swap a component (on a car) and also had a wet/ fouled connection after water ingress on my T7. The car’s ECU had to be told it had a new component first and was fine then ( came out of a safe setting). This was using someone’s mega expensive snap on device.
The o2 sensor on the T7 was dry but the fault code still needed clearing to remove the “alert” on the bike. I bought a cheap ish (£40?) code reader with a Yamaha plug and it reset easily.
If it doesn’t clear it, the fault is still physically there.
Hope this is of some help.

Re: Non running xt660z
Hi , had one of these , the wiring routed along the frame can some times rub through. Along by air box just under seat.
Mine had tilt sensor showing as well but it ran OK.
Some mods to air sensor were done to richen mixture . A resistor was put in line. To make it think it was slightly colder.
To check wiring unplug ecu and the component you want check and do resistance check with an ohm meter .
Good luck with your project .
Not a bad bike once you sort out the gremlins.
