It gets sprayed from the pressure oil feed that lubricates the big end.

Hi,
Forgive me for crashing in on this post but this is something I'm interested in as I may have to buy a complete XT bottom end for my bike and I suspect that the one I'll find will have an imperfect small end bearing. Every old 4 stroke I have had until I got the XT had a phosphor bronze small end bush, lubricated by splash, that bore directly on the gudgeon pin. So, I cant see why a plain bush would not work on an XT if the materials and tolerances were right.
However, I would not use Oilite as the manufacturer of Oilite bushes specifically state that their bushes are not suitable for impact loads such as conrod bearings. Oilite bushes are made of compressed Bronze and Iron dust to make them porus for retaining oil so in a small end they'd most likely crumble away. Also, they are super hard and very difficult to ream. I used to have a machine shop where I made precision bearings for turntables using Oilite bushes. Reaming them bluntened the reamer and introduced dust into the pores, blocking the flow of oil. After cleaning that out I had to boil the bushes in oil to refill them with lubricant. It was such a pain in the arse. I got around it by not machining the bushes at all and reaming the Steel bearing body I made to provide the correct compression of the bush for the right clearance on the shaft.
So, if I were to make a small end bush for an XT I'd use Phosphor Bronze or Nickel Aluminium Bronze. It's still tricky to ream but it has much more structural integrity than Oilite.
