Starter motor very slow...

Help!!!!
And so... Starter motor is very slowly turning over the engine, but when I take it out the starter motor spins very quickly... So under stress it fails and just drains the battery..
I did try a car battery on it and no difference, slow and fails..
If I kick it over it kicks easily..
Is there a rebuild kit available???
And ...
There is no spark either,.. I suspected its because the motor isn't spinning the engine quick enough?? However if I kick it over it the engine turns easily enough but still no spark.
Ive checked the stator, pick up coil, conductivity of wiring from the start switch, there's no clutch switch to worry about and no side stand switch to worry about..

Ive not checked the gap between the pick up pack and the stator as I cant figure out if its possible without removing the flywheel...
I'm guessing it's not.

Any suggestions???

What bike?
After making sure all connections are fine mate, number one suspect is the stator. I know you tested it. I had identical symptoms. Wasn’t generating enough power for a good spark. Kicked but wouldn’t start on the motor. Clean the motor anyway while you’re in there but there’s not much to go wrong. Doesn’t take long to do. But my guess is stator. Even if it checked out for resistance. Mine had an earth fault to engine casing. If it doesn’t fire on kick either it’s not the starter.
Simple job. £100. New bike when fitted. Obviously I’d recheck all the cheap stuff again first. Test your stator to earth again. If that’s ok, might be as simple as circuit earthing elsewhere. I just reread this and it is a bit messy. Too lazy to edit though.

Ill retest the stator again this morning..
I did take the side off last night and noticed the pick up points were sloped... Not sure if that's supposed to be like that or not..
Any ideas where I can get a new one from??

Took the starter apart and the brushes are well worn, couple are down to the wire and it was randomly sticking as opposed to spinning freely like before, can I get brushes for it??

It depends on the model if you need battery voltage for ignition. Later models with TCI (1 single coil pickup and a long sloped lobe on the flywheel) do need battery for spark, older kickstart models have CDI which will not be affected by low voltage (double coil pickup and two single lobes). If possible show us pictures.

My solution for a good 1VJ electric start was to switch to Li-Ion battery for good starter rotation. However you should be able to get replacement brushes, if you cant find them email this guy:

This is where I bought mine for a XTZ660, as far as I know those are the same brushes, but he will know ...
If the brushes only do stick a good clean may be helpful enough.

Dang! That looks like an amazing amount of corrosion! Never seen anything that bad before. Is it as rotten in person as it looks in the photos?

Chin up mate. It won’t be as bad as you think. These old girls are “experienced” and have lived a little. Just doing what could be expected on an old bike (strip and cleaning, adding new rubber seals, check and regreasing bearings et) will, once ironed out, give you a seriously reliable bike. I get much joy now even just when I use mine for a twenty minute commute. Last year she was dead in the water. Only now, after taking it easy for a while would I have faith in her to travel any distance again. And I still want to change fifth gear and piston rings.
Just methodically go through assemblies and rebuild/reset to standard
Massive smiles await.

@scotteih yes it really is that bad...

@donnybach I've invested too much time and money now to stop.... Ive a rebuild kit coming for the starter so see how it goes back together and if it will work at all...
I have 2 stator, both are putting out good readings, one has 11HZ code on it with a brown and red wire coming off it
The other has 1FZ with a green wire and a black and red wire coming off it. (both have the 3 white wires)..
Coil checks out OK, as does spark plug cap.
Start button would spin (badly) the starter motor..
No sidestand switch and clutch switch has been removed....
New reg /rec on way,.. Ive checked and checked the earth leads, and all appear to be ok...
However I have missed earth before!!!..

You should probably check the condition of your starter clutch as well.
