I think i was a little too optimistic in my last post. It seems I can’t get rid of a loud knocking noise even after many careful valve adjustments and i now think i have a bottom end problem. Take a listen to the video
https://youtu.be/ybMeoOGqM74
None of the other xt’s i own even come close to making this much noise which doesn’t bode well for me. When i disassembled the top end for the rocker arm replacement i checked the cylinder bore for wear and it looked good enough. No disastrous scoring. I did not however check for up down play in the rod and i think i may be in for trouble. Bike has 150psi cold compression and starts easily, but this noise is not normal.

Is it just me? ignore the knocking & listen at around 0:32 sounds like a dry bearing.

The dry whine at 0:32? A bottom end split? Don’t tempt me with a good time...Mezo wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2020 11:29 pm Is it just me? ignore the knocking & listen at around 0:32 sounds like a dry bearing.![]()
Mezo.
I think, i think, i think the issue is rocker shaft slop in the head. The 500’s had a known history of drying up at the exhaust rocker and in the process it reams out the rocker shaft seats in the head. The 250 probably does the same thing. In fact a diy fix for the 500 is to drill and tap a hole above the rocker shafts and insert a grub screw pushing down against the shaft to keep it from rattling around. Unfortunately the 250 head ergonomics doesn't allow for a straight down drill and tap so I’m going to try swapping heads with a spare i have. Beyond that I’ll have to go ebay or junkyard hunting. Will be checking for rod play while I’m back inside the engine.
