Also, one of the replacement bushes that the swingarm pivots on was too long. I have seen several posts on this. The bearing/bush kit I bought (All Balls I think) was clearly not for a 3AJ. So, chicked one of them in the lathe a turned it down - not easy as they are hardened, but many light passes later I had reduced it length by 2mm. I love my lathe.
Baz by any chance do you know what the kit number was that you purchased. I am having endless trouble getting a kit for my 1VJ and those lengths are identical to what l need, yes l can turn down in a lathe

Hey Baz, any chance of some measurements of that engine stand, just LOA would helpbazmonaut wrote: Sat Dec 07, 2019 1:29 pm Pics of finished engine stand mit der rubber feetsies. My usual standard of functional-not-pretty welding. Special care taken to put the bolt holes close to the corners, and round everything off to avoid gouging the cases when kak-handling the engine.
Also pic of the puller for the crank bearing. I used parts of a proper puller, plus a ring and disc of ally that are off-cut of bits I have on the shelf, turned to size on my girlfriend (Boxford AUD).

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild
Its to hard giving measurements Spike, easier just to give the engine to your fabrication man & let him make it, measurements will never work as the holes have to be exact. You can buy stands ready made on ebay but they co$t.Spike wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2020 2:31 pmHey Baz, any chance of some measurements of that engine stand, just LOA would help
Edit: KEDO Australia has them in stock. HERE.

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild
Ah sorry Spike, I binned the packet a few weeks ago, and bought it many many years ago! I do recall feeling cheated when I bought it: it was advertised as being for a 3AJ but the package had XT600 90-93 model years on it. I have read elsewhere that the 73mm bushing is only available from yamaha as a seperate part.Spike wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2020 2:26 pm Baz by any chance do you know what the kit number was that you purchased.
As Mezo says, you are probably best to bolt the bits of the stand to your engine and then secure by welding, brazing or bolting. Just make sure that you round off the material around the holes for the bolts that go through the engine. Have a look at the corners on the upright bits on the pic about.
My stand is 380mm long, 250mm wide, and distance between the centres of the bolt holes to the cross-pieces on the frame are 80mm (shorter uprights) and 110mm (longer uprights). Material is 25mm x 2 equal angle.

Perfect info there, guess l will order for the 3AJ and take 2mm off one of the bushes and it should fit the 1 VJ. Knocked up a base for an engine stand in the weekend, similar dimensions as that, cheersbazmonaut wrote: Mon Apr 06, 2020 12:04 pmAh sorry Spike, I binned the packet a few weeks ago, and bought it many many years ago! Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild
Check out my wikkid new nickel plating skilz:

That's my first nickel plate in anger. Am working my way through all the various little brackets and stuff, mostly black zinc passivated but the bright bits will now be nickel plated.
I had decided not to plate the axles due to the faff of sorting a larger tank. As my wheel hubs need a paint and my spokes are rusty, I decided to do the wheels at a later date. However, have just realised that the tank support bar was originally also zinc plated and is the same length as the front axle... hmmm...

Speedo drive cable housing was painted with VHT engine enamel then baked. The rest... the picture says it all. So very satisfying taking greasy rusty crap and turning out stuff like this.
Only downside is cleaning off that lovely red Saharan dust... guess I will have to go get some more.

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild
...now I'm just showing off.
You can still see scratches and stuff through the plating, but that's OK with me as it keeps some character. The axles spacers are zinc plated, while the eccentric adjusters are nickel - which is much warmer in colour though thicker.
And, after 13 years in a box, the wheels are finally back on. Am now going to focus on the engine and start adding bits to the frame like fuel pump etc. Still undecided on which shock to get: YSS or Wilburs. I called YSS and they don't have alternative spring rates available, only the standard 85 N/mm. Will call Wilburs next week and see what they have. This may be the clincher and I may have to stump for the Wilburs.
