Does it matter whether the Re & White goes to "+" or "-" on the coil ?

Direct wire from battery positive to bypass red/white wire to coil did nothing.
Testing resistance on the black wire (earth I presume) to battery negative produced a reading of 0.6 Ohms.

9 months after after it ceased to run, and proved to have only the weediest spark, she runs again ! But not very well
A lot of the delay has been due to discovering that the nearside seat support frame tube was rusted out and I had to put a new one in, which of course needed welding which then led to a full powder coating job that got held up over Christmas. And then the rebuild. And all the time I was thinking "but I still haven't sorted the spark problem"
Then in February I had the opportunity to buy a 1952 Ariel single that had not been on the road since 1960 In "faded" condition but very original and un messed about with. Grease in every bearing had gone hard so needed cleaning out and renewing and dozens of other bits of fettling, all to get it ready for a VMCC run around in Wales that would have been the weekend just gone. Well, I had it sorted a couple of weeks before the Corona virus thing hit us all, so like everything else, that event was cancelled.
So, I hauled the XT out from the back of the garage and picked up where I had left off, and today got to the stage of "lets just see if its spark has reappeared" My God it has !
All through the rebuild I had kept in mind that the ignition fault possibly/probably had been due to a bad earth somewhere, though I often thought that was a forlorn hope. But I paid particular atention to good earths between engine and frame and everywhere elseon the rebuild. So maybe it was just that.
So gleefully I stuck the plug back in, put some fuel in it and gave it a go.
It tries to run. At first firing a few beats and then not, never picking up. choke on or off made no difference. Eventually it did catch and ran for maybe 30 seconds, but didn't clear and died again.
When it did run the were occasional bangs from the silencer.
My guess is that maybe fuel left in the carbs has dried up and gummed something up.

So please, any ideas ?

Checking the plug, it looks as if if just ran enough to give the plug a bit of colour, suggesting weak mixture which is what it felt like.

When i rebuilt mine & first tried to start it, i did the usual "see if i got a spark" and like you it was piss weak, its supposedly normal?
