1VJ Clutch Setup

Post by Muppdog »

Hi, been a long time since I needed some help.
A long, long time ago I fitted new clutch plates when I reassembled the engine on my 1VJ. I followed the Klymer and a German manual . Both asked for the pointer on the clutch actuation lever to line up with the mark on the crank case. Pictures in both not clear at all. Problem is, No Mark on the crank case but two pointers on the lever. Back then I just winged it, pushed the lever forward to line up with the cable exit and assembled the rest. Worked, but not well. The clutch bites too late.
I now got an actual 1VJ clutch cover which I am going to fit. While I am in there I want to adjust the clutch properly. So, where is the illusive mark on the case? And which pointer is the right one? I am ok with the rest of the process.

Thanks
Rob

weirdly, I'm putting the engine back together in mine.
I was missing the washer behind the shift actuator but it came today. So I'll be putting the clutch side back together this evening.
I had noticed the two markers on the clutch arm, mine has a fairly distinct mark on the crankcase, but the outer cover is away at the sprayers.
I'll have a play later and try and get my head around the two pointers :bigeek:

Thank matey. Where abouts is that mark on your crank case? In relation to the lever. Or oil pipe.

The lever setting is correct when there is a right angle between lever and cable at the point where the clutch is actuated.
I can have a look and maybe take a picture in the evening.

Found a picture in an original Yamaha workshop manual (XT600E 1986-90) and made a picture of it ...

Not sure if it is the same with the 1VJ

OK, so I made a picture. Please note that my 1VJ has the electric leg removed, so this may be much harder with the electric motor hiding the clutch lever.

Also note that the clutch lever is perpendicular to the cable, when the marks are aligned ...
The 1VJ lever has the same little indicator as the XT600E lever in my earlier post, plus a bigger one to align with the 1VJ engine case indicator, so I think this is one lever to fit several models.

All the best

Thanks Guys,
Sorry for not replying sooner. Not a total git, yet. My tablet I am travelling with only gave me 'fatal error' messages when tapping the reply button. But here I am, and grateful.
Looking at the pictures and reading your discriptions my setup was pretty much OK. I aimed for the cable to be at 90 deg with the lever. Still was not happy with the clutch action.
Will let you know how I get on after redoing the set up. Still traveling atm.
Btw, can't recall seeing that mark. Does not mean it's not there, though.
Thanks

Rob
