Pete's 89TT/94XT Rebuild

Post by psahd »

This is the start of a very painful rebuild!

Some of you might be scratching your heads thinking  I'm sure I have seen this picture before :patch:

This is APK's TT600 that never made it back onto the road - or bush! I decided to buy me a Xmas present! So within days I had it stripped down to nuts, bolts and pipes. Before I had seen the bike, I had already ordered big end, piston, valves, timing chain, sprockets & chain, oil pump & filter etc.

The frame is from a '89 TT and the motor is a '94 XT 600e 3AJ/3TB

Things have progressed really well.. I have completed spraying the frame and have rebuilt the motor. The crank had never been split, and apart from a massive amount of wear on the big end, it was good inside. Gears are clean, shift dogs are square. I did not need the new valves but put them in anyway. So, mechanically the bike is sound now. Electrically... the wheels have fallen off!

The TDI unit is a HPI 4607D which produces a really good fat blue spark.

So, here is a picture of what the rotor should look like

and this is what mine does look like. Spot the missing magnet! Also, the extra little round disk was glued on with what looked like contact adhesive! It was also not magnetic..

For reasons unknown, the pickup magnet as well as the balancing strip has been removed from the rotor. Which makes it pretty useless!

Anyone out there got a spare rotor laying about?? I dont think I am going to find one in South Africa!
If anyone is busy rebuilding a 3TB or any of the 600's, it would assist me greatly to get a few measurements off the rotor. I can always replace the missing "teeth". :pleasesir:

Hi XTJoe

Thanks for that lead. I will definitely follow up on that. I have tried all the guys in Cape Town, Mossel Bay, Durban, Klerksdorp??
This was obviously not a very common bike in SA. Probably made it way here through Africa..
