Clutch actuating arm removal 1VJ

I have a new seal. Anyone know if it is possible to remove the arm without stripping the engine.

I never have done it, but I should imagine it would only need the removal of the cross head securing screw (can be a bitch) down by the sprocket /neutral switch and it should lift out, the only problem you may have is if the actuating rod slides back through the gear shaft but you should be able to push it back with a long thin screwdriver.

Honestly.... I cannot work out where all the oil is coming from!!
The rear shock has loads on it, even has what looks like fresh oil dripping! Checked back of oil tank.
No oil in air box, just all over the area round the starter motor.
Starter motor and carbs removed, powerful torch.... Breather looks solid, so do all pipes.
I don't know if it is the actuator arm, but just trying things

Look at the transmission feed line where the banjo bolts fasten it , there should be a copper crush washer on both sides of the feed tube ends . Yours should also have the oil tank return line bolted to the top of the engine right next to the starter , check that, there is an o-ring under it . Also look at the breather hoses , there is one big one between starter and head , there is also a small one down there on some motors (older at least) instead of the one up on the valve cover. It may have a cap on it that could be cracked. When I put my first 3TB motor in my older XT, that also had the valve cover breather hose barb, I just T'd them together and then back to the tank , I used some hose that was laying around and ended up split , I had oil dripping all over from it , I think that came from too much oil in the tank and/or a one way check valve that was clogged.

The clutch arm seal was the only other heavy leaking seal I've seen up there.

Cam chain tensioner sealed up good ?

Otherwise get some good degreaser and clean the motor off as good as possible. Once dry put some talcom powder or simply baking four all over the are then start it up and see where it gets wet first . It's a mess .

Its a 1VJ so it wont have those banjo bolts (no external oil feed)

Ah , that's one of the in-between motor that we never got . Our older ones don't have 'em, but all the E-starts do . That motor is a basic e-start 34L then or 3aj, we missed out on a lot of different options . Sucks that some of our motors have the starter bosses already there ready to drill & tap, just no starter idler gear boss under the stator cover , so no way to add the starter.

1VJ has both eclectic & kick start, its the only Tenere that came with both from the factory.

3AJ on had external oil feed.
1VJ has no starter lugs, but a bracket which secures to the clutch cover.

I bought my first 3AJ back in 1988 from John's of Romford, picked the bike up from the shop & rode a couple of miles... by the time I got home the back of the bike was covered in oil, they'd overfilled the oil tank... they did exactly the same thing a couple of months later when I bought an XT600... You might have too much oil in it

Thanks all. Geoff I did have too much oil in it when I did my first change, but a decanted some, still leaking.

Saying that........ I've drained the oil from the engine and oil tank and it certainly looks a lot more than 2 litres!....

I'll check the clutch seal anyway and also helicoil the four buggered threads whilst the clutch cover is off and tank drained.

Interesting thing is.... If there is too much oil in, where is it coming from? The air box is dry, nothing coming out of the two overflows.
