Fuel Taps

Hi all.

These cheap chinese fuel taps (generally speaking, I don't expect feedback on exact model!!), are they even worth their $6.48 each?

It's a non essential part, so I'm not concerned too much about being genuine, etc. Genuine costs over 100US, and seal kits are 40-50 odd US each.

I'd rather through the difference at getting 4th/5th gear set engineered up in the greater scheme of a rebuild.

I know Dave (dirtwanabe) is doing the homework on the exact same thing on his 1VJ right as we speak, he has spoken with Lambeth last week on costings & is waiting on a quote.

I went down the moorespeed path enquiry-wise a while back. I made some calls and also spoke to a friend about it. He got gears made up for his valiant from a guy who engineers parts for the V8 supercars. Acquaintance/Friend of his - so could come in at a reasonable price. Would be carbon copy of what is in there already, but slightly wider gears and apparently different strength options through grade/treatment.

Yet to fully explore. I remember being told between 200-250$NZ per gear a while back as a rough guide (by a different bloke).

I've actually got 3 engines to comb over for best parts. 2x 1VJ and 1x 3AJ. Planning on moving forward with the 3AJ in 1VJ bike option.

Hi, as Mezo said I am still waiting for a quote for a gear rebuild. My 3rd, 4th & 5th all need replacing, the output shaft also has some wear but that gets replaced in the process.
As for the fuel taps, mine are diabolical! You need to get off and use some pliers to move them, I get scared that I will snap them off.

Will you be after an output shaft? I'll have three when I start my engine rebuild. 2x 1VJ and 1x 3AJ. I'm assuming they are the same?! You can have one if you pay for postage!! Obviously I don't know what condition they're all in, and it could be another month before I split open the engines. My workshop space frees up when a gearbox is replaced in a Valiant.

If your looking for the older XT gears I can get many over here that will be good . We don't get as many miles on our bikes so the trannys are often in good shape I have 2 or 3 sets myself . A person could have them cryogenically treated and see if it helps against the spalling .

Maybe even shot peened as is done with steel cranks.

There is also DLC , a very hard and friction reducing coating that should help if the spalling is due to cavitation of the oil .

Hello all, well just an update. Niether Mr Lambeth or Mr Moorespeed has replied with a quote. Anyway as you can tell I have not done much toward fixing the bike, I'm still feeling down about the state of my Tenere.

As well as the gears being worn the nylon gear on the back of the clutch basket that drives the oil pump is also looking worn (the gear teeth are thin). If I could find a late model engine I think I would paint it black (from the newer silver colour) and dodgy the engine numbers and put that in the bike.
