VIN on 86 Ten

Hi Guys
out of sheer boredom I tried to find out a few thing about my 1VJ by entering the VIN into some on line search engines. All are telling me the VIN is too short. They are looking for 17 digits. My VIN is only 9 digits long. Apart from a dealer where else can I find out what the original colour was (blue bike with original frame colour black?) and where it was imported from? Frame, engine and plaque and log book got the same numbers on them.

International DIN standard 17 digit VIN numbers for bikes were not compulsory until around the mid ninety's or possibly later.

So you can only search by engine and frame number (usually the same from factory).

I don't think a black frame was ever standard on a 1VJ......only red or blue.

That's what I thought. Hence the search. I bought a blue bike with blue frame but when we stripped the frame the colour beneath was black. There is the possibility it was painted black before blue. But then it was very thoroughly stripped to bare metal before the black. Don't think it was primer as it was gloss.

Don't know if anyone is still interested, but iv'e just stripped my 1vj down and my frame was originally black with blue over the top, i just got some paint made using the RAL code of 2005 and its lighter than my frame and tank so the mystery continues!

They only came in red or blue as Dave mentioned earlier, the black is either primer or someone had painted in black, not the factory.

What primer did you use? darker colours need darker primer, and white coulurs you would use a white primer.
