Oil Tank Cap/Dipstick
Hiya everybody, It's been a while since I popped onto ask something as the old beast has been lugging my fat arse round the place without a care in the world and hasn't missed a beat. But all good things come to an end, although it is only minor, it has stopped me enjoying the old girl for the moment. My oil tank cap/dipstick has split right around the top and pisses oil out over the exhaust and tyre whenever you go around a right hand corner (not fun I can say that much, makes knobby tyres grip even worse...) After looking all over the net and ringing a lot of bike wreckers, it seems they are an elusive little fecker to get hold of anymore. So I am curious if anyone here knows where I can acquire another or even find a replacement cap without a dipstick, I can use an external dipstick if needs be, I'm just after something that will keep the oil in the tank so I can keep riding the old beast. Cheers for any help.

Re: Oil Tank Cap/Dipstick
Ive looked & found nothing 3AJ or 1VJ specific, take a pic of your dipstick (compare thread pitch) & a measurement of the OD.
Im thinking another one from a 34L will fit? page down & you can see its used on many XT`s possibly 1VJ & 3AJ also?

Re: Oil Tank Cap/Dipstick
Cheers for looking Mezo, but that's not the right type

This is the external oil tank cap not the internal engine oil cap.

as you can see in the 2nd pic, it's nice and split around the top, is that fixable? I would settle for a repair job on it if I can't replace it. I been across most of the ebay sites in europe looking for 1 as well, or anything that may be used as a substitute, dipstick or not on it. I'm at the end of my googling abilities lol. Oh and once I get to my friends place over the weekend I can get some accurate measurements on the OD etc for the cap as well.

Re: Oil Tank Cap/Dipstick
Will araldite be ok around hot oil? If so, then I have no qualms at all in gooping araldite around it to seal it up. As long as it isn't gonna leak or melt and drop goopy araldite crud in the oil then I am all for it. The thought had crossed my mind, but didn't think it would handle the temperature.

Re: Oil Tank Cap/Dipstick
Araldite will be fine in the short term, you MUST makes sure its thoroughly clean & free of oil though (especially in the crack) it can handle that temp (not that much) and sets rock hard.
Araldite is genius stuff, ive used in for decades.
There is that other stuff that’s just as good, used for bogging up leaky gas tanks & cracked engine cases (same ol same ol) its just two part epoxy with silver colouring, serious.
