Colorado on an XT600

Post by scottieh »

I did a quick jaunt around the Colorful state on my new (to me) 1985 XT600. Here are a few photos including some snowy pics from the top of Pikes Peak! :omg:

If you go to Ouray, I highly recommend going to Orvis Hot Springs. They are a lithium hot springs resort with many pool options, camping, hotel accommodations, and is a beautiful place to spend a weekend. The pools are clothing optional and most importantly they don't smell like dirty diapers because they are lithium and not sulphur! Post photos!

Finally in Ouray Colorado. Staying at Riverside Inn in a cabin. Small but good accomodations. First ride on Sunday up to Engineer Pass. Fun trip. Kind of a break in ride, now we are fighting rainy weather. Should be clear Wednesday, this is Monday. Minor repairs being done after shake down ride and some bolt shook out of my son's KX500, they vibrate quite a bit... My 86 XT is running very well, it always has. So far I've not had to jet down but have not pushed it to kick in the secondary. I suspect I'll have to jet down the secondary to a 125 from a 130. If that is not enough, an old trick I've used on it before is to put .020" stainless steel safety wire thru the secondary main jet. Runs cleanly after that. I have the wire but am waiting to see if I'll need it. I am not running the original carbs but some identical stock carbs I pickup. The 84 is running just as well.

Sadly back home. Pics coming soon. Weather started out wet but by Wednesday it was perfect and still is. Beautiful up there and crowds are minimal after Labor day. Best time to come....

East bound towards Ophir pass, notice the forks compressed as this water crossing was just after a dive off higher ground.

Montana mounted. I had a problem on 3rd day with the montana, kept cycling off like key was turned off and asking if I want to keep it on internal batteries. I finally found the + battery terminal had vibrated loose, once tight worked very well. This was a shake down run for the montana as it is very complicated to get all the tracks set up and just basic operation in the field finding the tracks etc. It is fun to see the track appear as you progress. Once on a track it was not necessary to pay much attention to it as the rocky roads demanded much attention. Where the usefulness is greatest is finding the trail heads and exits.

This is on Black Bear pass summit.

My older son on the 84. Looking westward towards Telluride from Black Bear summit.

My younger son's Plated KX500. Notice the kluge on the radiator top. This is the makeshift plug using a nylon pipe plug wrapped with permatex and a strip of T shirt. It held the rest of the trip.

Image

Only flat was on my 86, older son riding it then. It now has a 4mm thick tube in it...

Our base camp at Riverside Inn, Ouray Co. USA. Good place, clean. One evening about 10 BMW's arrived and spent the night. Sorry no pics of them

Random pic from somewhere... I got used to standing again, much easier over the rough stuff and downhill.

Nice looking pictures! :star: What kind of tires were you running for this trip? Looks like some variety of knobbies.

Did you guys make it to Orvis Hot Springs at all? It's my favorite. I can ride on dirt all day long so long as there is a nice hot tub at the end of the day
