Advice/knowledge needed?

Post by ZINTXO »

Looking at buying either an XT600 or a TT600RE.
I have checked the spec sheet on both bikes and noted the difference between
the two regarding seat height and fuel capacity and rear tyre size.

I am looking for any comments and advice on both bikes as not sure which one I should
go for. Had XT500 years ago and want to go back to this type of bike. I will be using it
for my daily transport and attending rallies, riding in the Pyrenees/Spain, Stella Alpina,
some greenlaning on occasions so it’s going to be earning its keep.

I like the idea of the RE as it’s the latest incarnation of a long pedigree but wonder if the
XT would serve me better/as well?

Any thoughts/responses would be appreciated.

Cheers Reg (Zintxo)

Hi Reg ,

I've got a TTRE with the earlier Belgarda Ohlins rear shock and WR 400 Forks - It's a bit tall ( I'm a 30" inside leg) and I'm on my tiptoes , this is the second TT I've had and they have a different "feel" to them - hard to explain really , maybe they have a rougher feel . I've also had XT's in the past - all Tenere's from '83 to '90 which I felt were more road orientated and easier to touch the ground on ! Also if your considering aftermarket stuff - accessories , etc, it's probably more likely that there will be more available for the XT on E-Bay , Gumtree and Preloved .

Please come back to the TT Forum if you get a TT - It'd be nice to have some company !

This is what i started with, 1991 XT600e that the PO had fitted alloy rims and a 18' rear wheel to (better choice of tires) These bikes are very common and parts can be found for little cost, aftermarket parts are also common with the large tanks being harder to get but they do turn up often on ebay.

I would love to use some of the TT600 suspension parts on the bike, but resisted, as i ride this bike all over the place and if i ever need parts when away from home then it's not confusing for someone else when trying to get parts over the phone etc………trying to explain that, it's a 1991 XT fitted with a 1996 TT swing arm and Belgrade Ohlins shock with a disk brake conversion and 18' rim, can get really confusing!

These have the heavy steel swing arm, THAT can be welded by a Tibetan monk and blessed at the same time.

All the parts fitted were easy to find and very reasonably priced, Hepco & Becker top box and rack (second hand), Acerbis tank (second hand), centre stand (second hand) New white bros front springs and rebuilt and re-sprung rear shock, re-shaped seat (to suit my fat ass) bark busters and a tall screen. I run with soft bags (Andystrapz) behind me on the seat and the top box for touring, I use the top box for V & A items (valuable and attractive) and everything else in the soft bag. I made two steel tube crash frames and fitted them to the side of the bike where the side covers are, these stop the topbox and the bags touching down in a fall….They've been tested and work :falloff:

This is the bike currently, without the bags fitted.
