Wiring with Stilmotor Fairing

Hi All,

a while ago I got an old Stilmotor fairing from the 80s. After a whole lot of sanding, it is now at least a 1/4 thinner, and shaping to make it fit nicely I had it sprayed blue and was ready to fit it. Although there seems to be a lot more room the wiring is too tight now for the movement of the steering. As I only got the first page of the assembly instructions with the fairing I am not sure if there was some modification to be done to the loom or if there was even a loom part with the kit as there is for the indicators.
So here it is:
Does anybody have one fitted and can advice. Or has anybody got the complete instructions? Whatever it is I am not afraid of a bit of soldering and modifying of the loom. Just want to get the girl back on the road as I just sold the 660 Ten.

Hi Rob,

After a quick search i saw this thread by Tim who went the other way & mentions that he thought the wiring had been extended to suit his fairing.

Thanks for that. That would make sense as the headlight connector will eventually be pulled off simply by the movement of the front fork. My thoughts are that this would have been picked up by Stilmotor and they would have supplied some sort of solution to the problem. Some of the wiring from the switchgear can be routed to the sides of the instruments rather than through the middle of it,
Anyway, looks like a wiring job coming up.
And I have to agree with some of the remarks re the sturdiness of the Stilmotor frames. Unfortunately the precision of the manufacturing leaves a bit to be desired. Mounting points on the frames and mounting holes in the plastic parts do not line up. Because of the sturdiness of the frames it was easier to move the mounting holes in the plastic rather than cutting and welding the frames.
I am still looking for Stilmotor's rear fuel tank. Very rare I think. If anybody knows of one going let know.

Never heard of such a tank? how did you hear about them?

On the German xt600 forum. There are some photos of bikes with them fitted. The tank replaces the left hand side cover and the rear mudguard.

You can try this link to the photos of a class looking bike. Not sure if you need to be a member to see them though. It holds an extra 15 liters! Not totally sure that it is a Stilmotor item but I want one!

Thats Ingo`s bike, i know the main tank is a motoforms brand possibly the rear also? have a read here for more info.

You have pretty much zero chance of getting one of them tanks by the way, they are a factory one off made for the Dakar, even if you did spot one (very doubtful) it would fetch more than what your bike is worth, rare & as expensive as rocking horse poo.

Hi,
thought it was ambitious. Meanwhile I started the wiring. Using Yamaha plugs and pieces of a spare loom to extend the cables. This way it can be reversed at any time.
