Exhaust/silencer question: Tenere, 3AJ

Hi all , this is my first post. I'm the owner of an old Tenere 3aj and I live in Denmark. I hope to have lots of good reads and advice in this forum in the future. Of course also share knowledge, but I must admit, that i'm not that skilled into the art of Tenere'ism yet :-)

I have a semi urgent question I hope you guys can answer - my bike is in the garage and is currently missing the silencer, the old one was too rusty.


Question 1:

Is it ok to start my bike without the silencer? Just for a short while, or is it no go? I have mounted a fresh manifold on the engine, but I miss the rear silencer before the exhoust-system is complete. I just wanted to check if the first part (the manifold?) is mounted correctly and has no leaks (the reason why i started the change in the beginning)


Question 2:

Will silencers for other XT 600 models fit my 3aj - fx. this one http://www.ebay.de/itm/Yamaha-XT-600-E- ... 19dc489a70 is there some sort of comparison list, where I can see the overlap of silencers between different XT-models

Question 3:

Should I buy a new silencer - rather than an old original?

But would it require a lot of tweaking jets etc?

Yes it is OK. Just be careful of hot gas melting any nearby plastic parts.

As far as I know, most silencer from 1984 to 1992 will fit with just minor adjustment of mounting brackets.

Should I buy a new silencer - rather than an old original?
Original is preferred by most here, but new or non-original is fine. Jetting changes are usually minor, in fact most bikes are too rich from the factory and a better breathing exhaust will bring the mixture back to the correct ratio.

I just came back from the garage, tried to start it, and everything seems fine with the first part mounted - no leaks as far as I could see. Now: search ebay for the silencer

Could not help notice! But it might be worth your time to take a look at the fork seal on the right front fork. As is in the photograph above.

+ Any idea on the weight to that Arrow ?

Thanks for spotting the leaky fork - but it is actually a stain from last year. And you're quite right, the fork was leaky. I got some help from a friend and changed the seals and oil. I haven't been leaking since :-) I'm not that experienced a biker yet, so please feel free to suggest or spot other things in the future...

The Arrow-silencer feels quite light. I didn't weigh it before I mounted it though, but it feels half the weight of the old original silencer.

Sound of the arrow is very nice. Compared to my original it wasn't all the loud as I feared, but a little louder and more deep. Only downside is that the DB-killer is stuck due to a screw that is stuck - so I can't test the sound without it :-(
