Keihin carburetors

Good morning Tenere Land, Living in America and owning a 1989 xt600 ,I have found getting some parts to be a problem. While the bike runs fine, I recently upgraded the muffler to one with better exhaust flow, I have high-flo air filters also, and the restrictive air-box is long gone. I have looked on the internet for replacement carburetors to the YDLS carbs, for easier tuning and locating of replacement parts. I've come up with Kelhin CR dual carburetor sets. I was wondering if anybody has done this upgrade and how did they like the change? thanks for any input [img]http://i1321.photobucket.com/album ... .jpg[/img] Mike

I would love to own a set, Kedo sells them but its not in my budget unfortunately.

If your going down that road do it all, air filter, carbies, porting, cam & exhaust.

I do recall reading rumors of people fitting the twin carbs from a Kwak ninja 250. Could be worth an investigation.

Although the impression I get from the anecdotal evidence on the web is the xt engine does not really have much more oomph to give with bigger jets, air flow etc.

Yes one guy from on here did it, not sure if he ever got them set up properly though? he then sold the bike to Clubby i think from Trailzone (his 3AJ project bike).

Vander/Vando fitted a Raptor 660 carb on his XT, read about it here.









And he did manage to make it work.

That would probably be my prefered way of doing it, since you can then hook up a single FCR or TMR pumper carb. But depending on length of the intake manifold, wouldn't the carb itself be awfully close or even foul the frame and/or shock?

A two in to one wont fit (single carb) if it would i would have done it already, the only way it can be done is like on the old Dakar bikes using a downdraught carbie with the air filter coming through the gas tank, its not impossible just a lot of work.

Another option is to replace one side of the current setup with a mikuni or keihin so you have access to parts.
How about a 28mm mikuni from an old Z1000 instead of the left side carb or the 40mm keihin from a KLR650 instead of the right?

You keep the throttle control of the standard setup but fine tune using your "new" carb

A bit of fabrication needed, making new mounts to hold the carbs together & either welding the link arm to the throttle shaft of the left carb or grinding off the bowl mount on the right & have a tube connect the left carb bowl to the right main jet holder.

Another option might be the early XR6R double setup. Twin Keihin non-CV (they look very similar to the CR's). They're angled due to the odd valve angles but I think fabrication would be less than with two "odd" carbs. Not very big per se, but no butterfly to restrict flow at least. Probably no accpump but the YDIS setup doesn't have one either.
