I went out for a ride yesterday, got top the to of my street and the bike cut out. I rode about fifty miles on it and as I was pulling out of a junction it cut out again. Each time it has cut out I hit the starter and it starts straight away. Its not running rough or missing it just stops. On the way back from the ride I was on the motorway doing about 70mph it did it again, but because It was going so fast it bump started itself straight away, so it felt more like a cough. Anyone got any ideas?

Do they have a side stand switch? try unplugging it (if it has one) & see what happens, same goes if it has one of them clutch safety switches.

Model and year would be a good place to start. My crystal ball is little cloudy this morning.

As Mezo has already pointed out, sidestand switch & clutch are the likely culprits.
Also check the sidestand switch connectors under the left side pannel, they can get a lot of crap from the rear tyre & corrode.
If it is the sidestand switch, it comes apart so you can clean it, no need to buy a new one, don't lose either of the springs inside

Ooops sorry forgot about make and model its a 1998 4MY the same as phil w. Also every time it has cut out I have had someone on the back. Could this make the side stand hang down away from the switch?

Check for any scrape marks on your swingarm where the stand may be touching it, possible you passenger has big feet & they have knocked the stand while riding?

Just dis-connect the switch and tape the wires away (not touching).
The way the circuit works, is that open circuit allows engine to run.
Closed circuit stops engine.
I suspect passengers feet were bumping the stand.
