ADV riding mods done to my 4UX Tenere

Hi All

Got my 99 model 4UX about two year ago with about 30K on the clock.
Found out about the APC rally late in 2010 and had intended to do 2011 rally, but life got in the way
Anyway, am doing this year’s rally and tis only 49 days to go
I had hoped to post more about my mods sooner, but time is so precious ATM, so I thought I would give you a summary blurb of each mod and it anyone is really interested, I can post more photos and details.

1. Scott Oiler, fitted under LHS of instrument surround
2. High front guard, better in mud, but fork brace still a bugger, at least brace is easier to clear mud out of
3. Eagle screen
4. Fly screen cover over radiator (idea from Andy) to help shed mud
5. Yellow gators and repainted (yellow) rotor cover
6. Engine crash bars
7. Renthal 7/8 alloy bars (not really needed anymore with Damper mark 2 mounting
8. Bark busters
9. Roc Stompa steering damper, mark 2 (still in progress)
10. Motorader grip heaters (still in progress)
11. Garmin 60csx on ram mount
12. Spot connect on ram mount
13. customised quick release fittings for universal mounting tank bag
14. Rerouted carby breather hoses
15. Centre stand, bashed the shit out of it on four day rally and still needs fixing before APC rally
16. wider plate on side stand
17. Service and upgrade to springs on the OEM suspenders
18. Staintune pipe
19. upright luggage bar (Ventura)
20. Rear luggage rack support brace to rear most part of bike frame
21. Pannier frames
22. Larger tool box in place of standard, mounted to inside of LHS pannier rack, holds tools, elec pump, tube and chain oil
23. Modified saddle bag mounting to enable individual mounting with quick release side clips on all mounts. The individual mount across the saddle means I leave them PITA seat bolts out.
24. Steel pony Gascoyne saddle bags with two litres of water, 0.5L thermos and 710 bottle in the four outside pockets, two five litre plastic fuel containers, zip boil etc etc, no cloths or food due to fuel in bags.
25. Eaagle seat pad
Tent for me and bike, my cheap version of the Tenere tent, rolled and strapped on back with sleeping roll.
Exped down mattress and sleeping bag etc rolled and in a duffle bag with minimal other clothing
Rally cross pro 2 jacket with 2L camel bag bladder, orig bladder a POS. Forma Adventure boots, Draggin jeans, neck brace, lots of merino thermals and no helmit

Soon to add
blue tooth helmit comms
Motobatt
bluetooth UHF
Wider steel foot pegs
Plan to add fuel level tube to detemine fuel remaining in tank
Would love to add HID, radiator fan override for QLD summers, head light master off switch for cold morning starting, extra directional fins to direct more air to radiator

Holly crap thats a lot, think i need to get out and ride more and stop farkling with it

What have you used as your tool box, got a pic?

What height bars have you fitted? I fitted Renthal enduro high & found them to low, I think Vander has the same as me & also found them too low.

Looking & sounding like a bike built to ride Damo
(The pic looks pre rear spring, your seat height will be a few inches higher when fitted )

I picked up this keybox from crazy clark shop for $15. It is 300 x 240 x 60.

Rivited a peice of alloy angle to side so it can hook onto bottom rail of pannier rack.
It sits on the inside of the rack. Just enough clearance to chain guard.

I removed the peice of cast alloy that covered the old plastic tool box. The top fit neatly between the old tool box mount and the top of the pannier rack.

Than i have side release straps vert and horiz to hold it fast against the pannier rack.
I also wrapped a old bike tub around the pannier frame the provide some vibration protection.

The seat strap is fix on the exhaust side going over to a side release buckel on the LHS.


The exhaust side in looped around the luggage frame and bike frame. LHS is just the luggage rack.



This enables me to leave the seat bolts out, thus making it quick access to check the primary filter daily.

I have the scot oiler fixed to the headlight frame on the LHS.



Not the best photo. This view is with the side panels off. You can see the underside of the instruments and headlights in the back ground.

The supply tube follows the wire loom back down the frame, under the bty, down onto swing arm etc.

My supply tube goes up for a bit before heading down, but gravity still makes it work. The trick with bleeding the system is to have bike running with flow control set to max flow, than fill the unit as per normal. This will force oil past the sag so gravity can take over. The rest is per instructions

I can still refill the unit on a trip with the steering turned to one side. Sometimes need a torch to see the oil level.

Yes, i do need to use some double d on the nicko pen.
You guys do some impressive work on your resto, but for me it is more about thing that just work. Maybe i should buy a honda, stuff that, i like yama to much
I still need to take some good photos of the yellow gators and rotor cover, i do like it to look good, but practicality comes first for me.

Nothing wrong with any Jap bike, its the Korean/Chinese shit you wanna be wary of Damo.
