3AJ starter clutch

Post by dunc »

Hi Folks and help!
For the last few days riding I've had a nasty grinding/whining sound when starting the engine. I took the bike to a mechanic, he says this part is buggered:
Image
I'm waiting for a call back to see if he can source the part in Chile but I'm probably going to have to order it myself and have it sent out by courier.

I've found the part here:
http://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/oem-p ... TER-CLUTCH
but they don't have the 3AJ Tenere listed. Is this part going to fit my bike? Are all XTs pretty much the same?

Thanks,
Dunc.

Hi Dunc,

Checked the fiche for the 3AJ & come back with 1VJ-15590-00-00 which is obviously for the older 1VJ & also the 3AJ.

I put that number in Google 1VJ-15590-00-00 & found its now part number 3TB-15590-01-00 :star:

It wont be listed as "Tenere" as the US never got the Tenere bike, see this here also.

If it is indeed the starter clutch (part #10) in the fiche thats the faulty bit? are the bearings all OK then Dunc?

Boats.net have it also mate US$109 here & Boats have a sister company that is supposed to be cheaper according to Eric on here, ill try & find the name (back in a mo)

Many thanks for that Mezo,
Just a quick question that's confusing me. In the 3AJ service manual, page 10, the starter clutch bolts straight onto the magneto.
Here: http://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/oem-p ... TER-CLUTCH
There is a seperate one way assembly and one way bearing race.

My parts definitely look more like the latter.

The mechanic has just been round and through a translator, he said I need three replacement parts. Parts 1, 10 and 11 from here. http://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/oem-p ... TER-CLUTCH

Thanks,
Dunc.

Yeah, it's the one way bearing, the starter clutch assembly and the main gear. Either that or a kickstart kit from David Lambeth.

I think well wait for Geoff or Dave to chime in to this topic Dunc, Geoff or Dave is the starter clutch one piece on the 3AJ?

Or is it the same as the ones in the links above? 3TB just confirm or deny so Dunc can order the right part please.

Dunc ive looked on ebay for one to compare or see if there's good a used one but nothing out there, ill keep looking.

I've just been speaking to David Lambeth, he says these parts are for a 3TB and won't fit. Although, to my somewhat inexperienced eyes, the 3TB parts look more like the parts off my bike than they do in the 3AJ parts fiche.
These are the parts off my bike:
