It may be silly, but have you done the side stand switch, vibration may cause cutout.

Re TIG welding of Aluminium, you need an A.C. TIG welding machine with high frequency start. If you only have a D.C. inverter, you can only weld Stainless or Steel.
Looking closer at the machine, looks like an AC/DC machine. Make sure the leads are the right way round.

My XT600 1985 is a 49L engine No. so could be a hybrid.

The '85' is as I bought it ($750) the rings and timming chain were Rat Shit, I've gone first oversize 95.5mm with new piston, rings ...
