Just checked with my dealer. unfortunately he doesn't have one in stock... he can get one but it's on back order & may take a week or even a month... but with my discount he can do it for 200 quid... if he'd had one I could have arranged to have it sent out there... :banghead:
I also checked on the 1UY big bear part, he doesn't have one but its in stock in UK & it's a lot cheaper... 131 quid, know way of knowing if it's the same part though.... :scratch: if he orders one he can't send it back..... there must be a way of finding out.... you may be on to something there Mez...

As for the main gear.. I wouldn't worry about it Dunc, I'm sure it'll be fine... if its not I've got one here you can have.... I had the same problem with Tenere 2, when I pressed the starter button the engine sounded like it was mincing gravel... all I did was fit a second hand one way bearing & it was ok...

As for all the help, you're welcome mate... you had the balls to get off your arse & get out there & were all secretly jealous as fuck that it's not us.... but if we were in the same position we'd be glad of the help too....

Just wish you'd come on here before you went & we'd have told you to fit a bloody kickstarter..... :evil:

It's really not that difficult to do. All you have to do is quit your job (OK, if you've got a wife, kids and mortgage then maybe it can be quite difficult), get an overdraft and go. Maybe not in that order though.

I'd go so far as to say that it's the best (and easiest) thing I've ever done and I recommend it to anyone who likes bikes and travelling. Even the bad times (such as being stuck in Arica waiting for parts that may take another two weeks to arrive) are better than sitting in an office and the good times are just beyond comparison.
It really is as simple as deciding to go and then making it happen. The hard bit is making the decision to go. The rest just falls into place.

Here is some news about sprag clutches"

They are used extensively in automotive automatic transmissions. After researching I found the sprag elements from a Mitsubishi KM175/177 auto trans from 1988 to about1994 Colt, Lancer, Magna, Sigma are the closest fit for the 1vj starter clutch.

From memory the Yamaha elements are 8 or 9mm wide and the Mitsubishi are 10mm wide. You need to pull the elements out of the cage and carefully grind each one to the correct width. Then one at a time, remove the Yam elements from the cage and replace them with the ground down Mits ones.

You need to be extremely carefully with the orientation of the sprag elements. They can go in the cage four different ways, only one is correct. The difference is down to tenths of a millimeter.

Pay attention grasshopper.

So I stopped worrying and lo and behold, things did get worse!

Hi Dunc, I see from the Hubb you have managed to source a starter clutch. Nice one. How come it's going to take so long to get to the UK? Can I/we be of help to speed up the delivery? I'm in London if my location is any help to you.

I'll certainly take a look for you. The chilli in Chile has been a bit disapointing so far, it's tasty all right but about as hot as a tub of Hagen Daz. There was a Californian guy round here the other day. Owns a hostel near here. He was talking about chilli and getting it sent from home. Next time I see him I'll have a chat and see what he can get.
Bear in mind that they're really anal about fruit, veg and seeds (and animal semen!) crossing borders in these parts. I don't think a few seeds in an envelope are going to cause any problems though, so long as they're not coca.
