Now to the 1VJ and 3AJ (1986-1988)
As you can see the way it is bolted on the cover is diferent.Instead of 4 bolts used on the 34K engine type it uses only 3!
Also the pick up coil looks similar in body(or identical)the attaching part looks to be displaced on one ear?Any 1VJ or 3AJ owner should add some detail pictures of it.

And the late model its attached again with 3 bolts.It looks that the pick up coil has only two cables.

Any suggestion where I can find a replacement pick-up coil for my '83 34L?
I've had significant hot engine cut-out issues and left stranded a number of times. Typically have to wait 10-45 minutes before she fires up again.
Had the stator re-wired which improved performance but did not solve the problem entirely.
For good measure I also replaced the CDI with a Wieltronic one, but that wasn't the issue either http://www.ebay.com/itm/330928074321?it ... m=&vxp=mtr
Seems the pick-up coil remains the rotten apple to be replaced, but can't find one without buying complete stator assembly (expensive!).
Saw someone customising a pickup coil for a 1982 XT550 from two aftermarket coils with similar resistance here:

The resistance specs and 12, 36 deg advance for the XT550 appear similar to my 34L's (110 Ohms +/- 18%) and thought I should give this a try should no coil materialise.
Anyone tried something similar?

Ya that will be the route you'll need to take as well . The 550 is the same setup so follow what he did on TT .
